Rapid Population Increases in Idaho’s Small Towns: Ponderay, Star, Dover, and Paul Show Significant Growth Post-Pandemic

Idaho, traditionally known for its quiet and rural charm, is now experiencing an unprecedented population boom.

Since the pandemic, several towns in the state have seen their populations surge by up to 50 percent.

While Idaho typically ranks low in overall population, its growth rate has become one of the fastest in the nation.

One standout example is Ponderay, a small town nestled on the shores of Lake Pend Oreille. From 2020 to 2023, Ponderay’s population skyrocketed by 51 percent, adding 660 new residents.

This increase has transformed the town into a rapidly expanding ‘gateway’ community, conveniently located near Sandpoint and the famed Schweitzer ski resort. In fact, Ponderay proudly advertises itself as the ‘gateway to Schweitzer Mountain’ on its website.

Star, Idaho, also saw remarkable growth, with its population climbing by 45 percent over the same period. This charming town combines small-town allure with modern conveniences.

Outdoor lovers can explore the Boise River, ideal for kayaking, fishing, or simply relaxing. For golf enthusiasts, the River Birch Golf Course provides a fun yet challenging experience.

The local wine bar, Helina Marie’s Wine Bar, features an impressive selection of both local and international wines. Plus, Star’s culinary scene is flourishing with various dining options to suit all tastes.

Dover and Paul: Quiet Growth in Scenic Settings

Dover, with a picturesque location on the Pend Oreille River, experienced a 44.69 percent population increase.

The town offers a serene atmosphere and a range of outdoor activities, including hiking, swimming, and boating.

Dover Bay, a notable residential area, is known for its marina, trails, and community beach.

Similarly, Paul saw a 44.59 percent rise in population.

Nestled in agricultural country, Paul provides a peaceful environment and affordable living options, reflecting the town’s strong sense of community.

Swan: A Hidden Gem for Outdoor Enthusiasts

Swan, another town witnessing significant growth with a 33.48 percent increase, is a tranquil retreat surrounded by the stunning Teton and Caribou mountains.

It’s a paradise for outdoor lovers, particularly for those who enjoy world-class fly fishing on the South Fork of the Snake River.

The Political Tensions Behind the Growth

As Idaho’s population surges, locals are increasingly concerned about how this growth might impact the state’s traditionally conservative political landscape.

The influx of new residents from states like California, Oregon, and Washington is shifting Idaho’s demographics and political dynamics. In the past five years alone, the state’s population has grown by 12 percent.

Between 2021 and 2022, Idaho was among the top five destinations for Californians moving out, affecting California’s population trends. This rapid change has sparked debates and concerns about a potential ‘blue takeover’ and its implications for the state’s identity.
