President Cyril Ramaphosa is set to officially open the inaugural Google Cloud Summit in Africa on Wednesday at the Sandton Convention Centre in Johannesburg.
The event marks a significant milestone for the continent’s technology sector, bringing together leading voices from government, business, and the global tech industry.
The summit is expected to serve as a platform for discussions on the future of digital innovation while highlighting Africa’s growing role in the global technology ecosystem.
Focus on Cloud Technology and Artificial Intelligence
According to the Presidency, the Google Cloud Summit will unite international technology leaders, African policymakers, and influential business executives to explore how cloud computing and artificial intelligence can accelerate economic development across the continent.
The gathering aims to demonstrate how these technologies can improve public services, strengthen businesses, and create new opportunities for innovation and digital transformation.
Theme Highlights Google’s Vision for Africa
Held under the theme “Google Cloud is building for Africa,” the summit will also feature the unveiling of fresh investment commitments focused on South Africa.
These announcements are expected to reinforce Google’s long-term commitment to expanding digital infrastructure, supporting technological advancement, and fostering innovation within the country and the broader African region.
Investments Aligned With South Africa’s Economic Agenda
The planned investment announcements complement the South African government’s broader economic strategy introduced earlier this year.
In March, President Ramaphosa presided over the sixth South Africa Investment Conference, where the government promoted its development framework centered on Decarbonisation, Digitisation, and Diversification, while emphasizing improvements in the ease of doing business as a key national priority.
Supporting the R2 Trillion Investment Drive
The summit also aligns with the President’s latest investment mobilisation campaign, which seeks to attract R2 trillion in new investments between 2026 and 2030.
Government officials believe partnerships with global technology companies such as Google can play a major role in achieving this ambitious target by encouraging innovation-driven economic growth and attracting foreign investment.
Strengthening Digital Infrastructure and AI Skills
The Presidency said Google’s planned investments are intended to support South Africa’s national development objectives beyond financial commitments.
The initiatives are expected to contribute to the country’s Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI) agenda while expanding collaboration between the public and private sectors on artificial intelligence training, digital skills development, and AI policy formulation across Sub-Saharan Africa.
Technology Partnership Expected to Drive Future Growth
As Africa’s first Google Cloud Summit gets underway, the event is expected to reinforce South Africa’s ambition to position itself as a regional technology hub.
By combining government initiatives with private-sector investment, the summit aims to accelerate digital transformation, strengthen innovation ecosystems, and create new opportunities for economic growth across the continent.
