Prince William shared his appreciation for his wife, the Princess of Wales, as he prepared for the annual Earthshot Prize ceremony.
Speaking to the BBC and Sky News, he mentioned that Kate has been “amazing” throughout a challenging year, especially given her cancer treatment.
He expressed gratitude for her ongoing support, saying, “She’s doing really well, thanks. Hopefully, she’ll be watching tonight, cheering me on. She’s been amazing all year, and I know she’ll be eager to see tonight’s success.”
Family Commitment to Sustainability
As the prince geared up for the Earthshot Prize event, he also highlighted the family’s commitment to environmental sustainability.
William explained that like many households, the Prince and Princess of Wales take steps at home to reduce their environmental impact.
“Every family tries to do what they can,” he said, mentioning simple actions like recycling, conserving water, and turning off lights when leaving the house.
However, he emphasized that the Earthshot Prize aims to take those efforts to a global scale.
“We’re trying to tackle big issues with big solutions,” he explained.
“I’ve brought the children along on this journey, and I hope they’re watching tonight, proud of what we’re trying to do to inspire global change.”
A Personal Connection: Charlotte’s Bracelet
During his conversation, Prince William also shared a personal moment, revealing a bracelet made by his daughter, Princess Charlotte.
The bracelet, which bears the word “Papa,” was crafted by Charlotte after attending a Taylor Swift concert.
“It’s a relic from the concert,” William smiled.
“She gave it to me, and I promised to wear it and not lose it while I’m out here.”
Anticipation for Earthshot’s African Debut
Excitement filled the air as William spoke about the Earthshot Prize’s debut in Africa.
This year’s awards will be held in South Africa, and the prince was eager to bring the event to the continent.
“I’ve been looking forward to this moment for a long time,” he shared.
“I love Africa, and I’m thrilled to be here, experiencing the energy and enthusiasm that will surround tonight’s event.”
The Earthshot Prize will award five winners with £1 million each to scale up their solutions to climate and environmental challenges.
William expressed hope that the ceremony would inspire optimism and drive for change in a sometimes challenging political climate.
“The Earthshot Prize is about urgent optimism,” he explained. “People want hope, and we’re here to offer it.”
Africa’s Role in Global Climate Solutions
As the ceremony unfolds, the significance of Africa’s contribution to the environmental conversation remains paramount.
Although Africa is one of the least polluting continents, it faces severe impacts from climate change.
Prince William noted that the continent’s youth will play a crucial role in shaping the future.
“They’re the innovators, the game-changers who will help make the world a better place,” he said.
A Green Celebration
The awards will take place in an eco-friendly “super dome,” with a reusable structure and a green carpet for the evening’s guests, which include host Billy Porter and models Heidi Klum and Winnie Harlow.
The winners were selected from nearly 2,500 nominees across 75 countries, each bringing forward innovative solutions to environmental issues.
As the evening draws closer, the anticipation for the Earthshot Prize continues to build, with Prince William and his family at the heart of this ambitious global effort.
