Pope Francis Continues Treatment at Gemelli Hospital in Rome While Marking Third Anniversary of Russia’s Invasion of Ukraine

Pope Francis, still receiving treatment at Rome’s Gemelli Hospital, expressed his gratitude to the medical staff caring for him while marking a significant occasion—the third anniversary of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

In a prepared Angelus message on February 23, 2025, the Pope offered his reflections on his current health journey and the ongoing global crises that weigh heavily on his heart.

Pope Thanks Medical Staff for Their Care

While continuing his hospitalization, Pope Francis reassured the faithful that he remains focused on his recovery.

“I am confidently continuing my hospitalization at the Gemelli Hospital, carrying on with the necessary treatment; and rest is also part of the therapy!” the Pope shared.

He took a moment to thank the doctors and healthcare workers at the hospital, acknowledging the dedication and care they have shown him during this time.

Despite his struggles, he expressed immense gratitude for their attention and compassion.

Health Challenges Persist as Pope Receives Oxygen and Blood Transfusion

Vatican sources confirmed that Pope Francis is still recovering from a severe respiratory crisis he experienced on Saturday.

He continues to rely on supplemental oxygen through nasal cannulas to help him breathe and is receiving ongoing medical care.

To address a platelet deficiency caused by anemia, the Pope was given a blood transfusion.

These health challenges have certainly added to the Pope’s burden, but he remains hopeful and appreciative of the support he is receiving.

Celebrating Deacons and Focusing on Global Concerns

Despite these health setbacks, Pope Francis remained deeply engaged with the Church’s current pastoral affairs.

Although unable to attend the ceremony in person, the Pope marked the ordination of new permanent deacons at St. Peter’s Basilica.

Archbishop Rino Fisichella presided over the ceremony, where Pope Francis spoke directly to the newly ordained deacons, emphasizing the importance of their ministry.

“Dear brother deacons, you dedicate yourselves to the Word and to the service of charity,” he said, urging them to bring God’s love and mercy to all through their actions and words.

Marking the Third Anniversary of the War in Ukraine

The Pope also addressed the ongoing global crises, particularly the war in Ukraine, on the painful third anniversary of Russia’s invasion.

He expressed deep sorrow over the situation and reiterated his unwavering solidarity with the Ukrainian people, who continue to suffer from the violence and destruction of the conflict.

In his message, he called on people to pray for all victims of armed conflict, mentioning the struggles of people in places like Palestine, Israel, Myanmar, Kivu, and Sudan.

His words of compassion echoed the need for continued prayer and support for those enduring hardships around the world.

Gratitude for Support from Around the World

Amidst these somber reflections, Pope Francis also took a moment to express his heartfelt thanks for the outpouring of support he has received.

He especially appreciated the many messages, letters, and drawings sent by children from around the world, which have brought him comfort during his time of illness.

Though facing ongoing health challenges, Pope Francis remains committed to his mission and to praying for peace and healing in a world marked by strife.
