Pollster Nate Silver, known for his analytical insights, has publicly questioned President Joe Biden’s ability to lead and suggested he should step down for the remainder of his term.
This comes at a time of rising concerns over the global situation, particularly the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.
Silver, 46, a key figure in political polling, voiced his concerns on X, arguing that the president may not be fit for such a high-stakes job.
A Call for Resignation
Silver, who spent much of the fall defending polling models that gave Donald Trump an edge in the election, pointed out the risks of a leader who may not be fully engaged with critical global affairs.
“Is there any particular reason to assume Biden is competent to be president right now? It’s a very difficult job,” he wrote.
He went on to suggest that Biden should resign and let Vice President Kamala Harris finish out his final two months in office, especially considering the pressing decisions on Ukraine and other foreign issues.
A Strained Relationship with the Press
Silver’s comments were partly fueled by Biden’s increasingly visible distance from the press.
A Washington Post article detailed Biden’s recent avoidance of journalists during a trip to Peru and Rio de Janeiro, drawing attention to moments where he seemingly sidestepped reporters’ questions.
During an event at the Museum of the Amazon, maracas drowned out shouted questions from the press, further emphasizing his reluctance to engage.
Unsettling Moments on the International Stage
Biden’s behavior on this trip raised eyebrows, particularly when a photo-op in the Amazon rainforest appeared to show him wandering off into the woods.
The 57-minute helicopter tour, which stood in stark contrast to the dangerous expedition of Teddy Roosevelt over 100 years ago, was widely criticized as an odd choice for a global leader in the midst of international tensions.
Meanwhile, Biden’s interactions with the press were minimal. As he boarded a flight to Rio, a TV producer held up a sign asking about critical issues such as Ukraine and China, but Biden didn’t respond.
Pressing Questions, No Answers
One of the most striking moments came when a reporter, desperate for a comment, screamed as Biden boarded Air Force One: “Mr. President. President Biden. Please, we haven’t heard from you all trip. Mr. President!”
Even appeals to Biden’s ego, like wishing him an early happy birthday, did little to elicit a response.
In Peru, Biden ignored questions about former President Donald Trump and gave only a single-word reply to a question about North Korea: “Peacefully,” which could only be heard faintly on camera.
A Surprising Snub at International Summits
Biden’s press avoidance wasn’t the only controversy on his trip.
At the APEC conference in Lima, he was placed at the back of a group photo, a snub that raised questions about his standing on the world stage.
At the G20 summit in Rio, Biden was left out entirely from the group photo, a decision that surprised many and drew live commentary from reporters.
The Press’s Role in Democracy
The White House has maintained that Biden’s interactions with the press are his choice.
However, his refusal to engage has led to increasing frustration, particularly given the critical role the press plays in holding leaders accountable.
The New York Times issued a public statement earlier this year, criticizing Biden for avoiding questions from independent journalists, stressing that such behavior undermines transparency and the democratic process.
As Biden faces mounting international challenges and scrutiny at home, questions about his ability to navigate these pressures continue to grow.
Whether or not Silver’s call for resignation gains traction remains to be seen.
