On Wednesday night, Cavan Sullivan took the field for the Philadelphia Union, marking a historic moment in MLS.
At just 14 years old, he became the youngest player ever to step onto the pitch in Major League Soccer.
This impressive debut is just the beginning for Sullivan, who is set to join Manchester City once he turns 18 in 2027.
For now, he’s soaking up the experience with the Union, having come on as a substitute in the 85th minute of their 5-1 victory over the New England Revolution.
At 14 years and 293 days old, Sullivan has surpassed Freddy Adu, who previously held the record as the youngest player in MLS history.
Adu made his debut at 14 years and 306 days old back in 2004.
Sullivan’s achievement also makes him the youngest debutant in the history of North America’s major sports leagues, including the NFL, MLB, NBA, and NHL.
A Remarkable Contract
Earlier this year, Sullivan made headlines by signing the largest homegrown contract in MLS history with the Union.
This deal includes a clause ensuring his eventual move to Manchester City.
A Promising Start
Before his first-team debut, Sullivan had already been making waves, scoring in each of his last two games with the Union’s reserve team.
During his brief appearance against the Revolution, he took a shot from outside the box, though it was easily handled by the opposing goalkeeper.
Praise from the Coach
Union coach Jim Curtin, who praised Sullivan as a ‘generational talent’ in June, spoke about the young midfielder’s readiness.
“He’s earned his spot based on his recent performances with Union II,” Curtin said.
“He’ll get opportunities, whether it’s one minute or 90 minutes, but he has to keep working hard.”
Curtin also noted that Sullivan displays moments of talent that can’t be taught, highlighting his exceptional potential.
Family Ties
Sullivan’s older brother, Quinn, has been a part of the Union’s first team since 2021 and is now 20 years old. The Sullivan family’s presence in the league adds to the excitement surrounding Cavan’s future career.
