Parents Struggle with PTSD After Their 10-Year-Old Daughter Is Murdered by Teenage Cousin in Gunnedah, New South Wales

Rebekah and Dominic Porter are grappling with PTSD after the brutal killing of their 10-year-old daughter, Bridgette, in July 2020.

The Porters opened up about their ordeal in a recent 7NEWS documentary, sharing how the gruesome details of Bridgette’s death have left them both unable to return to work.

Bridgette, affectionately known as Biddy, was staying with relatives in Gunnedah, New South Wales, when she was fatally attacked by her 14-year-old cousin.

Biddy had traveled from her home in Orange to visit family for the school holidays.

Her time at the family farmhouse was supposed to be a joyful break, but it turned into a nightmare when her young cousin, already showing troubling behavior, attacked her. The teenager had previously expressed violent thoughts and had even harmed animals on the farm.

This disturbing pattern of behavior went unaddressed, culminating in the fatal assault on Biddy.

Disturbing Details Emerge

Dominic Porter recounted the horrifying scene when he was told by a forensic social worker that they were “in the process of putting Bridget back together.”

He was only allowed to touch her foot at the funeral due to the severe damage.

The attacker’s diary revealed a fixation on violence and detailed plans for further assaults, adding to the horror of the situation.

The Family’s Ongoing Pain

Rebekah and Dominic’s suffering has been compounded by their inability to return to normal life.

Rebekah, who was diagnosed with delayed onset PTSD, described her initial shock as so overwhelming that she couldn’t even care for herself.

She expressed a deep sense of disbelief and horror, wishing for any other kind of death for her daughter rather than the brutal one she endured.

Legal and Legislative Challenges

The teenage attacker was found guilty of murder but deemed not criminally responsible and is currently in a forensic health facility

. The Porters are advocating for legislative changes to ensure that victims’ identities are not automatically suppressed.

They believe honoring Bridgette’s memory and legacy is crucial, and they are pushing for more transparency and respect for victims of serious crimes.

Moving Forward

The Porters continue to fight for justice and seek meaningful changes in how such cases are handled.

Their story is a powerful reminder of the long-lasting impact of such tragedies on families and the need for legal reforms to protect and honor the victims.
