Muhammad has officially claimed the title of the most popular baby boy name in England and Wales for 2023.
According to figures from the Office for National Statistics released this morning, 4,661 boys were named Muhammad last year—an increase of 484 compared to 2022.
This jump secured the name’s spot at the top for the first time.
Shifts in the Boy’s Top Names
While Muhammad surged to the number one position, Noah, which held the top spot in 2022, slid into second place with 4,382 namings.
This marks a decline from its 2022 total of 4,586.
Last year’s third-place name, George, was overtaken by Oliver, which took the third spot with 3,556 namings.
Luca saw the biggest gain among the top 15 names, moving up from 12th place in 2022 with 2,625 namings to 7th place in 2023 with 3,195.
Henry also made a notable rise, jumping from 13th to 10th place.
A Surge in Unique Names
The top 100 boys’ names featured several interesting changes.
Bodhi experienced the highest year-on-year jump, rising from 637th place to 100th.
Chester also made an impressive leap, moving from 581st to 89th place.

Olivia Remains the Queen of Girl Names
On the girls’ side, Olivia held onto the top spot, despite a slight decline in the number of babies named Olivia—from 3,289 in 2022 to 2,906.
Amelia and Isla retained their positions in second and third place, respectively.
Ava, however, saw a drop, falling from 4th place in 2022 to 6th place in 2023.
Willow saw the most significant rise, jumping into the top 10 with 1,833 namings.
Fluctuations in the Girls’ Names Top 100
The girls’ top 100 names saw greater fluctuations compared to the boys’ list.
Nova made the most dramatic leap, skyrocketing from 1,128th place in 2022 to 81st place this year.
