Olivia Holds onto Top Spot for Baby Girl Names While Muhammad Rises to the Top of the Baby Boy Rankings in England and Wales for 2023

Muhammad has officially claimed the title of the most popular baby boy name in England and Wales for 2023.

According to figures from the Office for National Statistics released this morning, 4,661 boys were named Muhammad last year—an increase of 484 compared to 2022.

This jump secured the name’s spot at the top for the first time.

Shifts in the Boy’s Top Names

While Muhammad surged to the number one position, Noah, which held the top spot in 2022, slid into second place with 4,382 namings.

This marks a decline from its 2022 total of 4,586.

Last year’s third-place name, George, was overtaken by Oliver, which took the third spot with 3,556 namings.

Luca saw the biggest gain among the top 15 names, moving up from 12th place in 2022 with 2,625 namings to 7th place in 2023 with 3,195.

Henry also made a notable rise, jumping from 13th to 10th place.

A Surge in Unique Names

The top 100 boys’ names featured several interesting changes.

Bodhi experienced the highest year-on-year jump, rising from 637th place to 100th.

Chester also made an impressive leap, moving from 581st to 89th place.

These shifts show that more unique and diverse names are gaining popularity.

Olivia Remains the Queen of Girl Names

On the girls’ side, Olivia held onto the top spot, despite a slight decline in the number of babies named Olivia—from 3,289 in 2022 to 2,906.

Amelia and Isla retained their positions in second and third place, respectively.

Ava, however, saw a drop, falling from 4th place in 2022 to 6th place in 2023.

Willow saw the most significant rise, jumping into the top 10 with 1,833 namings.

Fluctuations in the Girls’ Names Top 100

The girls’ top 100 names saw greater fluctuations compared to the boys’ list.

Nova made the most dramatic leap, skyrocketing from 1,128th place in 2022 to 81st place this year.

This surge highlights how quickly certain names can rise in popularity based on shifting trends.

Why Muhammad Continues to Lead

The popularity of the name Muhammad, along with its various spellings, has been steadily rising due to several factors.

The growing Muslim population in the UK and the influence of iconic figures like Mo Farah, Mohamed Salah, and Muhammad Ali likely contribute to its dominance.

While Muhammad’s rise might seem recent, this trend has been ongoing when considering all variations of the name.

Celebrity Influence on Baby Names

Celebrity culture remains a powerful influence on naming trends in the UK.

In 2023, the success of Oppenheimer and Barbie introduced a surge in the popularity of Cillian Murphy and Margot Robbie’s names.

Robbie, in particular, saw a significant boost in namesakes, with her popularity nearly doubling between February and July of 2023.

This trend demonstrates how Hollywood can shape naming choices around the world.

What’s Next?

As cultural influences continue to evolve, it’s exciting to think about which names will rise in popularity in the coming years.

With ongoing shifts in celebrity influence and the growing diversity of the UK, baby names will likely continue to reflect both global and local trends.
