Banyana Banyana have moved one step closer to next year’s Women’s World Cup after defeating Nigeria 2-1 at the Moulay Rachid Stadium in Casablanca, Morocco, on Thursday.

The victory secured South Africa a place in the FIFA playoff tournament, keeping their hopes of qualifying for the tournament in Brazil firmly alive.

Kgatlana Breaks the Deadlock

The match remained goalless until the second half, when Thembi Kgatlana put Banyana Banyana in front in the 56th minute.

The forward made the most of a well-weighted pass from Hilda Magaia before finding the back of the net to give South Africa a crucial advantage.

Jane Doubles South Africa’s Lead

Captain Refiloe Jane then extended the lead in the 77th minute with a powerful effort from the edge of the penalty area.

Her strike found the net to put Banyana Banyana 2-0 ahead and leave Nigeria facing a difficult task in the closing stages.

Swart Stands Firm Under Pressure

Nigeria managed to pull a goal back as the match approached its conclusion, setting up a tense finish.

However, South Africa held on for the win, with goalkeeper Kaylin Swart playing a decisive role.

Her string of important saves frustrated the Nigerian attack and helped preserve Banyana Banyana’s advantage.

Swart’s performance earned her the Woman of the Match award.

Playoff Tournament Awaits in November

South Africa will now turn their attention to the next stage of the qualification process, with the FIFA playoff tournament scheduled for November 2026.

According to the South African Football Association, the playoff field will include two teams from Africa and Asia, alongside one representative each from Oceania and South America.

For Banyana Banyana, Thursday’s victory represents a significant step forward as they continue their pursuit of a place at the 2027 Women’s World Cup in Brazil.
