Baseball icon Tommy John, whose remarkable career helped transform the treatment of serious elbow injuries in professional baseball, has died at the age of 83.
John passed away peacefully at his home in Lakewood Ranch, Florida, according to a statement from his agent, Mike Maguire.
His wife, Cheryl, and other members of his family were by his side.
A Career That Changed Baseball Forever
John became internationally known for the pioneering elbow operation that now bears his name.
The procedure, commonly known as Tommy John surgery, has since allowed countless pitchers to return to professional baseball after suffering severe damage to the ulnar collateral ligament (UCL).
His own injury occurred in 1974 while he was pitching for the Los Angeles Dodgers.
By then, John had already established himself as a four-time All-Star after earlier success with the Chicago White Sox.
A damaged UCL was widely viewed at the time as a devastating, potentially career-ending injury.
But Dodgers team physician Dr. Frank Jobe attempted an experimental procedure that would ultimately alter the course of baseball history.
He Returned for Another 14 Seasons
Rather than ending his career, the surgery gave John a second chapter.
He successfully returned to the mound and continued pitching for another 14 years.
John ultimately spent 26 seasons in Major League Baseball, taking the mound for the Cleveland Indians, Chicago White Sox, Los Angeles Dodgers, California Angels, Oakland Athletics and New York Yankees.
He finished his career with 288 victories, a remarkable total that placed him among the game’s most durable and accomplished pitchers.
An Emotional Goodbye to the Yankees
John’s death comes shortly after he delivered an emotional farewell to the Yankees and their supporters while dealing with health problems.
The Yankees had planned to honor John and other club legends during Old-Timers’ Day on August 8 ahead of their game against the Atlanta Braves.
However, John was unable to attend the ceremony in person.
Instead, the Yankees shared a statement from him with fans, allowing the former pitcher to express his gratitude to the organization and those who supported him throughout his career.
“I will never forget you,” John wrote.
Remembering Those Who Helped Save His Career
In his farewell message, John expressed appreciation to the Yankees organization, the Steinbrenner family, his teammates and the fans who followed him throughout his 26-year career.
He also recalled advice from his father before he left home to pursue his dream of becoming a professional pitcher.
His father reminded him that regardless of how far baseball took him, he would always remain Tommy John from Terre Haute, Indiana.
John said those words had stayed with him throughout his life.
A Legacy That Extends Beyond His 288 Wins
Perhaps John’s most enduring contribution to baseball was not measured by his win total or All-Star selections.
He specifically credited Dr. Jobe with saving his pitching career and acknowledged the enormous impact the operation later had throughout the sport.
“Thanks to Dr. Jobe, who saved my arm & made it possible for me to continue pitching,” John said in his farewell statement, noting that the surgery had subsequently helped countless pitchers, including many of the game’s biggest stars.
Tommy John’s name will therefore remain permanently linked not only to a distinguished playing career, but also to one of the most significant medical breakthroughs in modern baseball.
