In a recent update, Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe indicated that Alexander Isak is expected to be sidelined until after the international break.
This news comes in light of Isak’s recent struggles with a broken toe, which has sparked discussions about his health and the decision to let him play through the injury.
Playing Through the Pain
Isak’s injury was sustained during a match against Wolves a couple of weeks ago.
Despite this setback, he participated in the game against Fulham just six days later, thanks to a painkilling injection.
However, he began experiencing discomfort towards the end of that match and was subsequently ruled out for the draw against Manchester City last Saturday.
As a result, he is now likely to miss the upcoming trip to Everton as well as Sweden’s Nations League matches against Slovakia and Estonia.
When questioned about whether playing Isak against Fulham had exacerbated the injury, Howe defended the decision.
“I don’t think that would be the case,” he said, explaining that the situation was about managing pain.
Isak was able to play for about 80 minutes before feeling any issues with his toe, leading to a tough decision: continue playing through the pain or risk being out longer.
Looking Ahead
Howe suggested that there might still be a chance for Isak to return sooner than expected, saying, “Possibly, yes.”
The coaching staff is assessing his condition daily, leaving the door open for a potential appearance against Everton if everything aligns.
“Does he play in that game, or do we leave him knowing that he’ll be OK two weeks afterwards?” he posed, highlighting the careful considerations surrounding Isak’s health.
New Debut for William Osula
In the meantime, Newcastle will look to summer signing William Osula to step up during their Carabao Cup match against AFC Wimbledon.
The young forward, who joined the club for £10 million from Sheffield United, is set to make his full debut.
Although he has only played a brief seven minutes this season, Howe sees significant potential in the Danish Under-21 player.
“There is a process new signings have to go through,” Howe explained.
He acknowledged that both the coaching staff and Osula himself need to work hard for him to develop into a Premier League striker.
Howe noted Osula’s speed, physicality, and ability to stretch defenses as key attributes that can contribute to the team.
Positive Progress
Howe expressed optimism about Osula’s development, stating, “He has an ability to score goals and have a physical impact in the game.”
His positive attitude and willingness to improve have made a good impression on the coaching staff.
As he prepares for his first start, the hope is that he will bring a fresh dynamic to the squad as they navigate through this challenging period.
With Isak’s return still uncertain, all eyes will be on how Newcastle adapts in the coming weeks, particularly with emerging talents like Osula ready to make their mark.
