New Orleans Saints Turn to Pope Francis for Prayers Amidst Struggling 2-7 Record Following Seventh Consecutive Loss to Panthers

The New Orleans Saints are gaining attention for all the wrong reasons after sending a quirky message to Pope Francis.

In the midst of their disappointing 2-7 season, the team is finding itself at the center of both sympathy and mockery after the Pope unintentionally included their hashtag in his social media posts.

A Unique Response to Another Loss

Following their seventh straight loss, the Saints took to X (formerly Twitter) to respond to one of the Pope’s tweets.

The team’s social media account reposted an image of team owner Gayle Benson presenting a Saints jersey to the Pope, accompanied by the message: “Thank you for your prayers, Pontiff. We need them.”

While the post seemed to humorously lean into the team’s struggles, it was met with a barrage of comments from fans, many of whom were quick to criticize.

One user joked, “Y’all admitting you’re cooked literally brought tears to my eyes,” while another quipped, “Not even the pope can save this team.”

Some fans saw it as the team conceding defeat, with one commenting, “Saints admitting we’re a** is crazy.”

Finding Humor in the Pain

Despite the ridicule, some fans applauded the Saints’ social media team for showing self-awareness and humor in the face of their season’s difficulties.

One fan wrote, “Rare 2024 Saints W here,” while another remarked, “Self-awareness is key.”

It seems even Saints fans are starting to appreciate their team’s ability to laugh at their own misfortunes.

Pope’s Blessing Falls Short

On Friday, the Pope unintentionally sent a blessing to the struggling team with a tweet that read, “The #Saints are formed by the Beatitudes: poor, meek, merciful, hungering and thirsting for justice, seeking peace.

They are ‘filled with God’ and incapable of remaining indifferent to the needs of their neighbour. They bear witness to paths of light that we too can trod.”

Despite the uplifting message, the Saints could not secure a win, suffering a narrow 23-22 loss to the Carolina Panthers.

Fans are hoping the divine touch might turn their fate around when the team faces the Atlanta Falcons at home on November 10.

A Previous Blessing That Worked Wonders

Although this season has not been kind to the Saints, they’ve experienced divine favor in the past.

Back in 2019, Pope Francis tweeted a similar message before the Saints played the Jacksonville Jaguars, writing: “Today we give thanks to the Lord for our new #Saints. They walked by faith and now we invoke their intercession.”

That time, the team miraculously won, even without their star quarterback, Drew Brees.

As the Saints continue their search for answers, fans are left wondering if this season’s struggles might one day turn into another story of divine intervention.
