Neighbor Mourns as Local Family Tragically Dies in Motorbike Collision on A61 Between Barnsley and Wakefield

A neighbor’s heart-wrenching account has emerged following a tragic accident that claimed the lives of a family on July 23, 2024.

Megan Plummer, who lived near Shannen Morgan and Shane Roller, shared the devastating news of their deaths and those of their two young daughters, Rubie and Lillie, on social media.

The fatal collision occurred just before 4 p.m. on the A61, between Barnsley and Wakefield, when a motorbike, allegedly traveling on the wrong side of the road, collided with the family’s car.

Megan Plummer, who had spoken with the family moments before the accident, expressed her profound sorrow online.

In a heartfelt Facebook post, she reflected on the tragedy, saying, “Shane, Shannen, Rubie, and Lillie—words can’t even begin to describe how devastating this is.

To have been chatting with you just outside and then to lose you within an hour is just madness.

My heart aches. You were the kindest family, and being your neighbor was a pleasure.” She added, “You will be deeply missed, and the road feels emptier without you.”

School Pays Tribute

The local primary school, where Rubie and Lillie were students, also paid tribute to the sisters.

A statement from Athersley North Primary School described the girls as a joy to teach.

“It is with deep sadness that we share the news about Rubie, Lillie, and their parents,” the statement said.

“Rubie was a kind, happy, and diligent student with aspirations of becoming a teacher.

Lillie was bright, bubbly, and creative, also dreaming of a teaching career.

Both girls were a delight and a valued part of our school community.

Their loss is a heavy blow to all who knew them.”

Support for the Surviving Daughter

The family was traveling in a Ford Focus, which reportedly burst into flames after the crash.

Callum Roller, Mr. Roller’s brother, expressed his heartbreak on Facebook, saying, “I’m absolutely devastated.

We’re all in shock and will miss you all so much.”

Paul Hepple, who had been looking after the surviving daughter, Poppie, after her mother asked him to, described the horror of the day.

“We were having Sunday dinner when we got the emergency call,” he said.

Hepple, a long-time friend of Poppie’s parents, has set up a GoFundMe page to support her education and future needs.

“Poppie’s a bubbly girl who loved Taylor Swift. Her family was beloved in the community,” Hepple added.

“No one is prepared for such a tragedy, but we’re here to support her in any way we can.”
