A security failure at NBC’s Rockefeller Center headquarters has resulted in the dismissal of a security employee after a man allegedly gained unauthorized access to a restricted area, confronted Today co-anchor Craig Melvin and used a racial slur.

Authorities have since identified the suspect and filed multiple hate crime-related charges while NBC reviews its security procedures.

Security Guard Fired Following Studio Intrusion

The incident unfolded Thursday morning at approximately 9 a.m. inside Studio 1A at Rockefeller Center in New York City, where NBC broadcasts the Today show.

According to reports, a security guard was terminated after the suspect was able to bypass building security and enter an area reserved for staff.

Surveillance footage reportedly shows two security officers stationed near the entrance shortly before the breach.

One officer briefly left his post, while the other allegedly failed to notice the suspect entering the restricted section of the building. It has not been publicly confirmed which employee was dismissed.

Sources familiar with the matter described the fired guard as a respected member of the security team, with colleagues reportedly expressing disappointment over the decision.

Suspect Identified and Charged With Hate Crimes

New York police identified the suspect as 41-year-old Andrew Truelove.

Authorities confirmed he has been arrested and charged with hate crime menacing, hate crime burglary, hate crime criminal trespass and harassment.

Investigators allege Truelove entered NBC’s headquarters seeking longtime weather anchor Al Roker.

When he was unable to locate Roker, he allegedly turned his attention to Craig Melvin, moving toward the anchor while shouting a racial slur.

Police also stated that remarks made by the suspect during the incident led officers to believe he may be experiencing emotional disturbance.

Craig Melvin Alerted Security During the Incident

Although the suspect reportedly made his way into backstage areas near dressing rooms and internal staircases, sources said he never reached the live television set itself.

Melvin is credited with alerting security personnel after noticing the intruder.

Staff members and security officers quickly intervened, preventing the situation from escalating further.

Authorities confirmed there was no physical altercation and no injuries were reported.

Approximately 15 minutes later, Melvin and fellow hosts returned to the live broadcast without mentioning the disruption on air.

Extensive Criminal History Comes Into Focus

Following Truelove’s arrest, details of his lengthy criminal record resurfaced.

Court records indicate he has had numerous encounters with law enforcement over several years.

In 2025 alone, he was reportedly charged multiple times with criminal mischief, while earlier this year he also faced assault, trespassing and reckless endangerment allegations.

His history stretches back more than a decade, including convictions in Virginia that resulted in prison sentences for several offenses.

Earlier Profile Documented Personal and Mental Health Struggles

Truelove was previously featured in a 2023 newspaper profile that chronicled his unsuccessful attempt to relocate to California in hopes of launching a social media company.

The article described how his financial resources quickly disappeared, eventually leaving him homeless as he searched for work, housing and assistance.

During interviews, Truelove spoke openly about living with post-traumatic stress disorder and a mood disorder, while acknowledging previous involvement with the criminal justice system.

The profile also detailed repeated conflicts at homeless shelters, where he struggled to remain in stable accommodation despite receiving assistance.

Extremist Beliefs Influenced Earlier Offenses

The same profile reported that Truelove attributed some of his past criminal behavior to extremist conspiracy theories he adopted through online content.

Among the incidents highlighted was the theft of memorial signs honoring victims of the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting, an offense linked to his false belief that the tragedy had been staged.

Earlier court proceedings also referenced a 2010 case in which he approached a child outside a Virginia school while carrying a lug wrench.

Mental health evaluations presented during those proceedings concluded that psychiatric conditions contributed to his behavior, leading the court to require ongoing treatment and compliance with prescribed medication.

NBC Reviews Security Procedures After Breach

The incident prompted a significant law enforcement response outside Rockefeller Center, where police vehicles, barricades and K-9 units were deployed while investigators examined how the suspect penetrated multiple security checkpoints.

NBC stated it is fully cooperating with investigators and emphasized that the safety of employees, talent, staff and visitors remains a top priority.

The network also confirmed it has launched an internal review of its security protocols following the breach.

Earlier, the broadcaster said the individual entered an unauthorized vestibule area near Studio 1A before approaching Melvin, reiterating that the encounter ended without injuries.

Melvin Reassures Viewers After Scare

Several hours after the incident, Craig Melvin addressed concerned viewers through social media, thanking supporters for their messages and confirming he was unharmed.

The veteran broadcaster said he was doing well and looked forward to returning to Today the following morning, signaling that the frightening encounter would not interrupt his hosting duties.
