Despite being convicted of multiple sexual assaults, Mohammed Kashif Khokhar, the CEO of KAU Media Group (KMG), has retained his position.
Khokhar, who is 43, was found guilty last November of sexually assaulting three female employees, though he was acquitted of charges involving three other women.
Khokhar received a 16-month prison sentence, which was suspended for two years.
Along with this, he was ordered to complete 40 days of rehabilitation, pay £2,000 in compensation to each victim, cover £9,000 in prosecution costs, and perform 80 hours of unpaid community service.
One of his victims, who remains anonymous for legal reasons, has expressed her dismay over Khokhar’s continued role as CEO.
She believes the company should take responsibility for ensuring the safety of its employees. “He was found guilty, and he’s still going about his business as if nothing happened.
It’s like nothing has changed,” she told openDemocracy. She also recounted how the trial felt like a personal attack, describing the experience as “gruelling” and expressing fear about the process.
Calls for Accountability
The victim has urged KMG to act, hoping that increased awareness will help others make informed decisions about working with or for Khokhar.
She emphasized the need for accountability and transparency within the company.
Controversial Behavior and Company Culture
Khokhar’s arrest in February 2021 did not stop him from participating in high-profile company events, including a Las Vegas trip and the KMG Christmas party shortly after his conviction.
During the trial, he reportedly dismissed the allegations as “bollocks,” suggesting that his accusers were motivated by his status and wealth.
The court also heard that KMG’s work environment was centered around extravagant parties. Despite his conviction, Khokhar continues to assert his innocence, criticizing the police investigation and citing unspecified failings.
Additional Scandals and Responses
KMG’s troubles extend beyond the sexual assault case.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, the company was awarded a £40 million government contract for PPE despite lacking experience in the field.
It faced criticism in 2021 for allegedly forcing furloughed staff to work and was accused of misappropriating funds, with Khokhar reportedly boasting about his lavish lifestyle on social media.
In response to the furlough allegations, a KMG spokesperson stated that the company repaid all furlough monies to HMRC proactively in June 2020, and no further action was taken by HMRC.
