Max Verstappen strengthened Red Bull’s position ahead of the Singapore Grand Prix after securing pole position in qualifying, beating Ferrari drivers Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton to the front of the grid.

The result marked Verstappen’s second pole position in a week and continued his strong form heading into Sunday’s race. His opening lap in the final qualifying session proved decisive, leaving his rivals unable to find enough time to take the top spot.

Leclerc came closest to challenging the Dutchman, finishing just 0.054 seconds behind him after his second attempt.

Verstappen’s First Lap Makes the Difference

Verstappen set the benchmark with his first run in the final qualifying session. Although Leclerc improved on his subsequent lap, the Ferrari driver could not close the small gap to Red Bull.

Hamilton had initially emerged as Verstappen’s closest challenger after the first runs but failed to improve his time on the second attempt.

The difficulty of finding additional pace during the closing runs affected several leading drivers, leaving the initial lap times particularly important in determining the final grid positions.

Antonelli Leads Mercedes Charge in Fourth

Mercedes driver Kimi Antonelli secured fourth place on the grid, putting him ahead of McLaren’s Lando Norris.

Antonelli’s result placed him among the leading contenders behind Verstappen and the two Ferraris, while his team-mate George Russell finished sixth in the qualifying order.

Russell, however, faces a significant setback. A penalty for using too many engine components means he will start from the back of the grid despite qualifying inside the top six.

Piastri Manages Only Seventh for McLaren

Oscar Piastri was the only driver among the top four teams, apart from Leclerc, to improve his time on the second run.

Despite that progress, the McLaren driver could manage only seventh place, behind Norris and the leading Mercedes drivers.

Pierre Gasly qualified eighth for Alpine, while Liam Lawson and Arvid Lindblad completed the top 10 for Racing Bulls.

The results leave Verstappen on pole, with Leclerc and Hamilton occupying the next two positions and Antonelli leading the remaining group of front runners.

Singapore Grand Prix Set for Sunday

The Singapore Grand Prix is scheduled for Sunday, 11 October, with the race due to begin at 13:00 BST.

BBC Radio 5 Sports Extra will provide live commentary, while the BBC Sport website and app will carry live text updates.

With Verstappen starting at the front and Russell facing a grid penalty, the qualifying session has set up a race featuring contrasting prospects for several of Formula 1’s leading teams.
