A Massachusetts woman, Lindsay Clancy, is set to face trial next spring for a horrifying crime that occurred while her husband was out.
Clancy, 33, from Boston, is accused of using exercise bands to strangle her three young children at their family home.
The tragic incident happened while her husband was away picking up medicine and takeout.
Clancy has pleaded not guilty to serious charges, including two counts of murder, three counts of strangulation, and three counts of assault and battery with a dangerous weapon.
Her children, Cora (five), Dawson (three), and Callan (eight months), tragically lost their lives.
Clancy, who was a nurse, appeared in court remotely last year from the hospital, where she was recovering from spinal injuries sustained when she jumped from a window.
She is now paralyzed from the waist down and is unlikely to ever walk again.
During a recent hearing, Clancy’s attorney, Kevin Reddington, argued that her mental illness should exempt her from criminal responsibility.
Reddington emphasized that Clancy had been struggling with severe mental health issues and had checked herself into McLean Hospital a month before the incident.
He highlighted that expert doctors and numerous witnesses observed her deteriorating mental state over the holidays.
On the other hand, prosecutors have painted a different picture.
They claim Clancy had been researching methods of killing and had a detailed plan for the murders.
The prosecution revealed that Clancy’s blood samples contained multiple antidepressants, which had been prescribed shortly before the incident.
Despite these medications, experts believe they did not drive her to commit such acts.
The Scene and Aftermath
When Clancy’s husband, Patrick, returned home, he found their children with exercise bands still around their necks.
He was horrified and immediately alerted the police, shouting, “She killed the kids!” The devastating scene revealed the children with their faces turning blue and purple.
Patrick later shared his grief and forgiveness in a fundraising post, emphasizing that their marriage had been strong and that Clancy was not fully understood by those outside their close circle.
Ongoing Struggles and Tributes
In April, Patrick ran the Boston Marathon to honor his children and raise funds for the hospital that treated them.
Despite their short lives, he expressed immense pride and love for his children, raising over $75,000 for Boston Children’s Hospital.
Patrick described his children as bringing him great joy and inspiration, underscoring the profound impact they had on his life.
As the trial approaches, the case continues to unfold with both sides presenting contrasting views on Clancy’s actions and mental state.
