Lucas Paqueta might be sidelined from football for up to a decade if found guilty of spot-fixing.
The Brazilian midfielder, currently with West Ham, has been accused of intentionally picking up yellow cards in four Premier League matches against Leicester, Aston Villa, Leeds, and Bournemouth. If the Football Association finds him guilty, he could face a severe 10-year ban.
Despite the charges, Paqueta is expected to continue playing for West Ham for most of next season.
The FA’s disciplinary process is anticipated to stretch over several months, possibly extending into next season or beyond. This means Paqueta will remain eligible to play while the case is resolved.
Legal and Transfer Developments
West Ham, preparing for their first season under new manager Julen Lopetegui, were approached by Flamengo for a possible loan deal involving Paqueta.
However, the club is now optimistic that the midfielder will be available for the majority of the upcoming season.
The legal team representing Paqueta has been granted extra time to respond to the FA’s charges. They estimate that gathering all necessary documents and witness statements from England, Brazil, and Spain could take several months.
Background on the Case
The spot-fixing investigation into Paqueta was first reported by Mail Sport in August 2023, which also led to the collapse of his planned £85 million transfer to Manchester City.
According to the FA’s guidelines, players convicted of spot-fixing can face bans ranging from six months to life.
In a statement on social media, Paqueta expressed his shock and disappointment at the charges.
He has consistently denied any wrongdoing and is determined to clear his name.
” I am extremely surprised and upset that the FA has decided to charge me,” Paqueta said.
“For nine months, I have cooperated with every step of their investigation and provided all the information I can. I deny the charges in their entirety and will fight with every breath to clear my name.”
