Lily Allen was spotted stepping out in New York on Wednesday, puffing on a cigarette, just days after dropping her highly anticipated new album, West End Girl.
The record, described as raw and unflinchingly honest, delves into the breakdown of her four-year marriage to actor David Harbour, which ended last December amid claims of infidelity.
The 40-year-old singer, who announced her first tour in seven years this week, has had a long history with smoking.
Despite several attempts to quit over the years, including after asthma attacks in 2014 and another attempt in 2020, she admits she returned to cigarettes and vaping while writing the emotionally charged album.
The Emotional Toll Behind the Music
In a recent interview with The Times, Lily opened up about how the album-writing process brought back intense emotions.
“If I didn’t vape, I’d be smoking cigarettes, and that would be disgusting,” she admitted.
“Actually, I was vaping and smoking cigarettes at the time—Parliament Light in one hand, a vape in the other, and lots of crying, lots of storytelling.”
The songs reflect a journey of processing heartbreak, confronting long-buried feelings, and confronting the realities of her past relationship.
A Natural, Effortless Look
On her New York outing, Lily kept her style effortlessly cool, wearing a simple white T-shirt and leather jacket, showcasing her natural beauty without any makeup.
It was a quiet contrast to the storm of attention surrounding her latest music release.
Tour Announcement Excites Fans
Lily’s fans have another reason to celebrate, as she revealed a UK theatre tour kicking off next March.
Glasgow will host the first shows, followed by stops in Liverpool, Newcastle, Bristol, and Cardiff.
The tour will culminate with a two-night performance at the iconic London Palladium. Tickets go on sale Friday, November 7 at 10 a.m.
This marks her first major tour since 2018, following her No Shame album.
In recent years, her live appearances have been limited to a guest spot with Olivia Rodrigo in 2022 and a headline performance at Glastonbury this summer.

In it, Lily questions, “How long has it been going on? Is it just sex or is there emotion?” She paints a vivid picture of betrayal and heartbreak, giving the unnamed woman involved a fictional moniker.
Using Music as Therapy
The singer has been candid about how making music became a form of therapy.
After her split, Lily reportedly checked into an £8,000-a-week trauma treatment centre to focus on her mental health.
“Nobody knew what was going on in my life,” she explained.
“So I got into the studio, cried for two hours, and then said, ‘Let’s make some music.’”
Moving Past Revenge
Despite the album’s sharp lyrical content, Lily has stressed that West End Girl is not a “revenge record.”
In a recent interview with Interview magazine, she shared, “I feel very differently about the whole situation now.
We all go through breakups and it’s always brutal, but I don’t feel confused or angry anymore. I don’t need revenge.”
She emphasized that the record captures raw emotions at the time of writing, rather than a desire to harm or attack anyone.
A Bold Album Launch Party
Lily celebrated the album with a unique launch party at Spanish restaurant Decimo, where she gifted guests a raunchy sex toy that doubled as a USB stick to play her new tracks.
Dressed in a striking Marc Jacobs minidress, she hosted 45 friends and family members in a lively, intimate gathering.
This rewrite keeps the human, conversational tone, introduces context before the main story, divides content into readable sections, and keeps all the key facts intact.
