British Transport Police (BTP) have released CCTV footage showing the movements of a convicted sex offender who targeted women traveling alone on late-night trains in London.
The footage was made public after 45-year-old Sebastian Vernon was found guilty of sexually assaulting two women in separate incidents that occurred within a two-week period.
Vernon, who is from west London, was sentenced to six months in prison on July 1 following a trial at Highbury Corner Magistrates’ Court.
In addition to his custodial sentence, the court ordered him to remain on the sex offenders register for seven years.
First Assault Took Place on a Nearly Empty Circle Line Train
The first incident occurred at approximately 11 p.m. on March 25 after Vernon boarded a Circle line service at Ladbroke Grove heading toward King’s Cross station.
According to evidence presented in court, the train carriage was almost empty, yet Vernon deliberately chose to sit beside a young woman.
While she remained seated with limited opportunity to move away, he sexually assaulted her.
Seeking to escape the situation, the victim pretended she was leaving the train. She stayed onboard only after seeing Vernon step off the service.
Second Victim Targeted Less Than Two Weeks Later
The second assault happened shortly before midnight on April 8 aboard a train traveling from Stevenage to Hitchin.
Investigators said Vernon again selected a woman who was traveling alone despite there being plenty of available seating.
He attempted to engage her in conversation, prompting the woman to become uneasy and move closer to the train doors in preparation for leaving.
As she waited to disembark, Vernon sexually assaulted her.
Victims’ Reports Helped Detectives Connect the Cases
The second victim used British Transport Police’s text-to-report service to notify officers about the assault.
Her report, combined with the detailed descriptions provided by both women, enabled specialist investigators to determine that the same suspect was responsible for both attacks.
The information gathered during the investigation ultimately led officers to identify Vernon as the offender.
Arrest Made Outside Court During Separate Legal Proceedings
Police later located Vernon as he exited a central London court where he had been attending a hearing relating to unrelated offences, including assault, theft and cannabis possession.
Officers approached him outside the courthouse and arrested him on suspicion of two counts of sexual assault.
He was handcuffed and taken into custody, where detectives continued their investigation before bringing the case to court.
Police Describe Offender as Opportunistic Predator
Following the sentencing, Detective Constable Iryna Cuthbert of British Transport Police described Vernon as an offender who deliberately searched late-night train carriages for women traveling alone before carrying out his attacks.
She praised both victims for reporting the incidents and assisting investigators throughout the case, saying their courage played a crucial role in securing the conviction.
Cuthbert also reiterated that tackling sexual offences across the rail network remains a key priority for British Transport Police and encouraged victims or witnesses to report incidents by texting 61016, stressing that every report is treated seriously and offenders will be pursued through the justice system.
What Happens Next?
With Vernon now serving his prison sentence and subject to seven years on the sex offenders register, British Transport Police say they will continue efforts to identify and prosecute offenders who target passengers on the railway.
The force is also urging anyone who experiences or witnesses sexual offences while traveling to report them promptly, emphasizing that timely reports can help prevent further attacks and bring perpetrators to justice.
Summary
Sebastian Vernon has been sentenced to six months in prison and placed on the sex offenders register for seven years after being convicted of sexually assaulting two women on late-night trains in separate incidents just weeks apart.
Investigators linked the offences through detailed victim statements and a report submitted via British Transport Police’s text service, leading to his arrest outside a London court and subsequent conviction.
