Kimberly Guilfoyle Denied Traditional Farewell by Greek President After Abrupt Exit as US Ambassador

Kimberly Guilfoyle is reportedly set to leave Greece without the customary diplomatic farewell usually extended to departing ambassadors, adding another setback to her abrupt exit from the role.

Guilfoyle resigned as US ambassador to Greece on Tuesday following a wave of allegations that prompted the Trump administration to call for her departure, according to the Daily Mail.

Under normal diplomatic protocol, an outgoing ambassador would typically arrange courtesy visits with the host country’s president, prime minister and foreign minister before leaving the post.

However, sources familiar with the situation told the Daily Mail that Guilfoyle would not receive the usual ceremonial send-off from Greek President Konstantinos Tasoulas.

A senior source at the US Embassy in Athens said the sudden nature of her departure meant she would not be permitted to complete the customary farewell visits.

The Greek president’s office also confirmed to the newspaper that there were currently no plans for Guilfoyle to make a formal protocol visit.

One senior aide to Tasoulas suggested, however, that Guilfoyle might attempt to arrange a farewell herself. The aide speculated that she could turn up in an effort to secure a ceremonial send-off despite the controversy surrounding her departure. This remains speculation rather than a confirmed plan.

Embassy Staff Describe an Unusually Abrupt Departure

Guilfoyle’s resignation has reportedly unsettled staff at the US diplomatic mission in Athens, where some employees described the manner of her exit as highly unusual.

One longtime embassy staff member, speaking anonymously to the Daily Mail, said the departure had been far more abrupt than the quiet transitions normally associated with ambassadors leaving their posts.

The staffer described the episode as unprecedented, suggesting that the speed and public nature of the developments had shocked the mission.

Another former embassy insider questioned whether Guilfoyle had been left without sufficient support as allegations against her emerged.

The source suggested that her appointment had always been expected to last for a limited period, while expressing uncertainty about whether the circumstances of her departure had unfolded as intended.

These accounts reflect the views of unnamed sources and have not been independently established as an official assessment of her tenure.

Financial Allegations Trigger Fresh Scrutiny

The controversy intensified following a Wall Street Journal report alleging that Guilfoyle asked Donald Trump donor Eric Deters to pay a $100,000 credit card bill shortly before her Senate confirmation hearing in July 2025.

According to the report, Guilfoyle allegedly sent a message saying the payment “won’t show up anywhere.”

The allegations added to existing scrutiny of her conduct during her time in Greece.

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, who visited Athens the previous week, described Guilfoyle as “a strong ambassador” but said he did not know whether the allegations were true.

The Wall Street Journal also reported that Guilfoyle had asked State Department officials to seek the removal of a Daily Mail report concerning an unpaid dinner bill of €1,586, equivalent to approximately $1,778.

According to the report, officials requested a receipt to establish that the bill had been paid, but Guilfoyle did not provide one. Sources familiar with the matter had previously told the Daily Mail that the bill was ultimately sent to the embassy.

The claims have not been established as proven misconduct, and Guilfoyle has said she intends to defend herself.

Guilfoyle Says She Will Fight the Allegations

In addressing her resignation on Tuesday, Guilfoyle said she would “vigorously defend” herself against the allegations connected to her departure.

Her resignation followed a period of mounting scrutiny that culminated in renewed attention to her financial dealings and her interactions with senior US officials.

The timing of Rubio’s visit to Athens also became a talking point among embassy insiders. He had travelled to Greece for the US-Greece Strategic Dialogue as the Wall Street Journal report emerged.

One former staff member claimed Guilfoyle had appeared particularly eager to maintain Rubio’s support during their final public interaction.

The source interpreted her embrace of the secretary of state as an appeal for help, although that interpretation represents the insider’s opinion rather than a confirmed account of Guilfoyle’s intentions.

Footage of the pair’s farewell on the airport tarmac was broadcast live across Greece. Greek Foreign Minister George Gerapetritis and Greek Ambassador Antonis Alexandridis were also present.

Embassy Sources Criticise Her Leadership Style

Several anonymous sources cited by the Daily Mail offered harsh assessments of Guilfoyle’s 11-month tenure, alleging that she had a difficult relationship with some embassy staff.

One senior source claimed employees were more relieved than shocked by her departure, accusing her of speaking dismissively to colleagues and disregarding advice from experienced career diplomats.

The source also alleged that Guilfoyle had resisted established safeguards intended to help her succeed in the role.

Another insider compared her approach to that of President Donald Trump, describing her as having operated with a similar forceful style.

The claims provide an account of workplace tensions as described by unnamed individuals. Guilfoyle’s resignation statement focused on her intention to defend herself against the allegations surrounding her departure.

Former Allies Reportedly Keep Their Distance

The fallout has also affected Guilfoyle’s personal relationships, according to people familiar with her circle.

One person described as a friend told the Daily Mail that people were not contacting her immediately following the resignation, suggesting that those who had been close to her were giving her space.

The same source described Guilfoyle as intelligent and politically astute, adding that she was unlikely to allow the controversy to end her public career.

Guilfoyle, who was previously engaged to Donald Trump Jr., took up her ambassadorial position in Greece on November 4, 2025.

A separate report from the Daily Mail alleged that she had maintained a private collection of notes about members of the Trump family, reportedly nicknamed “The Devil Wears MAGA” by insiders. The existence and contents of the alleged collection have not been independently confirmed.

Guilfoyle’s Departure Leaves Questions About Her Next Move

The circumstances surrounding Guilfoyle’s resignation have left uncertainty over when she will leave Greece and how her departure from the embassy will be handled.

The Daily Mail reported that the embassy entrance appeared unusually quiet on Tuesday night, with only a small number of lights illuminated and guards stationed at the gate. A dark SUV accompanied by an escort vehicle later entered the compound, although the identity of its occupants was unclear.

Lights were reportedly visible in Guilfoyle’s office on Wednesday, but her precise whereabouts and departure arrangements remained unknown.

Her official residence in Athens, Jefferson House, was also reported to have remained secured behind high walls, with a Greek police officer stationed outside.

The absence of a planned farewell with the Greek president would mark an unusual end to her diplomatic assignment. Whether Guilfoyle will make any further public statement or arrange separate meetings with Greek officials remains unclear.

For now, her resignation, the allegations surrounding her conduct and the reported reaction inside the embassy have turned what would ordinarily be a routine diplomatic transition into a closely watched departure.
