Kaizer Chiefs’ journey under coach Nasreddine Nabi faced its first setback as they fell 2-1 to Mamelodi Sundowns on Saturday afternoon.
While the match held promise for Amakhosi, Sundowns proved too strong to contain.
Sundowns Strike Early but Chiefs Respond
From the opening whistle, Sundowns controlled the first 10 minutes, dictating play and pushing Chiefs back.
However, Chiefs hit back on the counter.
Samkelo Zwane delivered a precise through ball to Ranga Chivaviro, who expertly outmuscled Musa Lebusa before slotting the ball past Sundowns goalkeeper Ronwen Williams.
Despite dominating possession, Masandawana couldn’t capitalize early, struggling to create solid opportunities.
Sundowns Equalize and Take the Lead
Sundowns’ persistence paid off in the 31st minute. Lucas Ribeiro calmly slotted home after receiving a well-timed pass from Tashreeq Matthews.
Not long after, Ribeiro turned provider, delivering a perfect square pass to Iqraam Rayners, who made no mistake and put Sundowns ahead 2-1.
Chiefs Push for a Comeback
In the second half, Kaizer Chiefs came out determined to equalize.
Chivaviro, who was arguably Chiefs’ standout performer, squandered a golden chance to bring his side level.
The opportunities didn’t end there.
Ashley Du Preez found himself one-on-one with Ronwen Williams but failed to convert.
Meanwhile, Edson Castillo had three excellent chances to change the scoreline but couldn’t find the finishing touch.
Amakhosi’s Late Rally Falls Short
As the clock ticked down, Chiefs threw everything they had at Sundowns, hoping for a late goal to salvage a point.
Despite several chances, poor finishing haunted them, and they couldn’t break Sundowns’ defense.
The defeat marks the first under Nabi, raising questions about what’s next for Amakhosi as they aim to bounce back.
