In the latest buzz from South African football, former Bafana Bafana midfielder Lance Davids has opened up about Kaizer Chiefs’ efforts to sign Oswin Appollis from Polokwane City.
The 23-year-old winger has been generating interest not just from local teams but also from international clubs.
According to Davids, the negotiations hit a snag primarily due to the challenges posed by the Polokwane City chairman.
High Demand for Appollis
Davids shared insights on MetroFM, noting that Appollis was in high demand, particularly from clubs in North Africa.
“I knew it was going to be a tough situation with Oswin because of all the interest,” he explained.
He pointed out that the chairman’s response to offers made the process even more complicated.
“The club owner initially accepted an offer, but then he just went offline, which left us in a lurch.”
Navigating Complicated Deals
Negotiating with North African teams added another layer of difficulty.
“They operate on a different schedule, working late into the night, while we were trying to conduct business during regular hours,” Davids explained.
Despite initial optimism, the situation took a turn when the team Esperance found a replacement for Appollis, complicating matters further.
Interest from MC Alger
Davids revealed that MC Alger also showed interest in Appollis as negotiations progressed.
However, they faced challenges in contacting Polokwane City’s owner, which stalled the process.
“We struggled to get hold of him, and unfortunately, it just didn’t happen,” he said.
As the transfer window closed, Sundowns entered the picture, but Davids noted that they faced similar communication issues with the owner.
Kaizer Chiefs’ Persistent Pursuit
Despite all these hurdles, it was believed that Kaizer Chiefs were in a prime position to secure Appollis.
Davids confirmed that Chiefs management was genuinely interested from the outset.
“We were pushing hard for this deal, but the club wanted the full payment upfront,” he remarked.
He acknowledged that while Chiefs were keen, they might not have had the financial flexibility to meet the demands.
A Disappointing Outcome
The former Ajax Cape Town star expressed disappointment over the failed deal, mentioning that key figures like Kaizer Junior and BobSteak were also invested in making it happen.
“There was a real opportunity, but unfortunately, it didn’t come to fruition,” Davids concluded, leaving fans to wonder what the future holds for both Appollis and the Chiefs.
