The future of the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise has taken a major turn after producer Jerry Bruckheimer confirmed that talks are underway with Johnny Depp about a potential sixth instalment.

Bruckheimer revealed that discussions with Depp are taking place while work continues on a screenplay for the long-running Disney adventure series.

Speaking at D23: The Ultimate Disney Fan Event, he told Deadline: “We’re talking to Johnny, we’re working on a screenplay, and hopefully we can get this done.”

The comments represent a significant development for fans who have long hoped to see Depp return as the legendary Captain Jack Sparrow.

Captain Jack Sparrow Could Return

Depp has portrayed the eccentric pirate in all five main Pirates of the Caribbean films, making the character one of his most recognisable roles.

The most recent movie, Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales, was released in 2017.

Since then, speculation about another chapter has repeatedly surrounded the franchise, although concrete details about a sixth film have remained elusive.

Bruckheimer’s latest remarks suggest the project is now being actively developed, although there is no confirmation yet that Depp has formally signed on to star.

Orlando Bloom Also Wants the Crew Back

The possibility of another film has previously received support from Orlando Bloom, who played Will Turner throughout the franchise.

Speaking to ITV’s This Morning last year, Bloom said he believed it would be exciting to reunite the cast, while acknowledging that the direction of any future film was still being worked out.

“I think they’re trying to work out what it would all look like,” Bloom said, adding that he personally thought it would be “great to get the band back together.”

The actor also indicated that different ideas were being considered before the filmmakers decide where the franchise should go next.

Five Films Have Defined the Franchise

The Pirates of the Caribbean film series began in 2003 with The Curse of the Black Pearl, which introduced audiences to Depp’s Captain Jack Sparrow and quickly became a major global success.

It was followed by Dead Man’s Chest in 2006 and At World‘s End in 2007.

The franchise later continued with On Stranger Tides in 2011 before returning for Dead Men Tell No Tales in 2017.

A separate short film, Pirates of the Caribbean: Tales of the Code: Wedlocked, was also released in 2011.

A Franchise Built Beyond the Movies

The series was inspired by the Disneyland attraction of the same name and developed into a major entertainment franchise featuring pirates, supernatural adventures and elaborate action sequences.

Its popularity has extended beyond cinema, with the Pirates of the Caribbean brand also producing several video games and other forms of merchandise and entertainment.

For now, however, the biggest question remains whether Depp will once again step aboard the Black Pearl.

Depp Has Another Major Role Ahead

The latest Pirates of the Caribbean development comes as Depp prepares for another high-profile performance.

The actor recently appeared at San Diego Comic-Con dressed as Ebenezer Scrooge, the character he is set to portray in the upcoming Ebenezer film.

That production is scheduled for release in November this year, giving Depp another major project as attention grows around the possibility of his return to one of his most famous roles.

Sixth Film Remains in Development

Despite Bruckheimer’s confirmation of talks, a sixth Pirates of the Caribbean movie has yet to receive an official release date or full casting announcement.

The producer’s comments nevertheless provide the clearest indication yet that the franchise’s long-awaited return is being seriously pursued — and that Johnny Depp could once again be at the centre of the story as Captain Jack Sparrow.
