Seko Fofana, a prominent player for the Saudi Pro League club Al Nassr, showcased his prowess by scoring the inaugural goal of the 2023 African Cup of Nations (AFCON).

The host country, Ivory Coast, faced Guinea-Bissau on January 13, 2024, in a thrilling Group A encounter.

Fofana’s Early Brilliance

In the 4th minute of the match, the 28-year-old Fofana found the back of the net, capitalizing on a precise pass from fellow Saudi Pro League player Franck Kessié of Al-Ahli.

This goal marked Fofana’s remarkable contribution to Ivory Coast’s AFCON campaign.

Celebrating a Pivotal Moment

Having represented France at the youth level, Fofana made his international debut for Ivory Coast on November 11, 2017.

His celebration after scoring in the AFCON 2023 opener reflected the team’s unity and determination, as if they had secured victory in the entire tournament.

Fofana’s Impact

This goal marked Fofana’s fifth in 12 appearances for the Elephant of Cote d’Ivoire, showcasing his significance to the team’s quest for a third AFCON title.

It was the sole goal needed to give the AFCON hosts a lead as they concluded the first half of the match.

Dominating the Second Half

In the second half, Ivory Coast continued to control the game, patiently maneuvering the ball and waiting for Guinea-Bissau to expose their defense.

The Ivorian team displayed exceptional runs, particularly on the left flank, captivating the Alassane Ouattara Stadium in Abidjan.

Krasso Seals the Victory

Jean-Philippe Krasso secured Ivory Coast’s triumph by doubling the lead in the 58th minute.

This goal proved to be the decisive blow for Guinea-Bissau, who appeared fatigued in the evening heat.

Next Challenges

Ivory Coast’s upcoming match is against the Super Eagles of Nigeria on January 18.

Guinea-Bissau will face Equatorial Guinea on the same date, marking the continuation of the 2023 AFCON in full swing.
