Italian mother who spent three decades in a coma after a tragic car crash in Treviso passes away at the age of sixty

A heartbreaking chapter has come to an end as Luigina Brustolin, a woman who spent more than three decades in a coma following a devastating car accident, has passed away at the age of 60.

The tragic accident, which occurred on May 23, 1992, in Pederobba, Italy, claimed the life of her one-year-old daughter, Sara, and left Luigina in an irreversible coma.

The Day That Changed Everything

Luigina, then just 27 years old, was driving her Volkswagen Golf when it collided with a Nissan Primera.

The crash left both her and baby Sara with critical injuries.

While Sara fought for her life in intensive care for 35 days, she sadly succumbed to her injuries just before her second birthday on June 29, 1992.

Luigina, on the other hand, suffered a severe head injury that left her in a deep coma—one she would never wake from.

For 33 years, her family clung to hope, caring for her and keeping her memory alive.

But on February 7, 2025, her heart finally gave out, and her family took solace in the belief that she was finally reunited with her beloved daughter.

A Mother’s Endless Devotion

For the first 17 years after the accident, Luigina’s mother took care of her with unwavering devotion.

After her mother’s passing, Luigina was transferred to a nursing home, where she remained under medical supervision.

Despite being unable to communicate, she was not forgotten.

Her loved ones continued to visit her, speaking to her and holding onto the hope that, in some way, she still felt their presence.

A Father’s Pain and a Life Rebuilt

Luigina’s husband, Franco Reghin, was just 26 years old when the accident tore his world apart.

Reflecting on that tragic day, he once said, “That morning, I lost everything, and my life changed completely.”

He stayed by his daughter’s side until the very end, watching helplessly as doctors confirmed there was no hope.

“Sara was aware of everything. I remember her tears, and mine too,” he recalled.

Her funeral was held on what would have been her second birthday.

Eventually, Franco remarried and started a new family, having two children who are now 25 and 23 years old.

Though he moved forward with his life, he never abandoned Luigina.

Remembering “Aunt Luigina”

Franco made sure his new family honored Luigina’s memory. His children knew her as “Aunt Luigina,” and he would often bring her home on weekends so they could spend time together. “The last time I visited her was just a month ago,” he shared, reflecting on his years of continued love and care for the woman who once shared his life.

The Final Goodbye

In early February, around her 60th birthday, Luigina’s condition deteriorated.

She was taken to the hospital, where she passed away on February 7.

Though her body had remained still for over three decades, her spirit had lived on in the hearts of those who loved her.

Her funeral will be held on February 12 at the parish church of Colbertaldo, where friends and family will gather to say their final goodbyes.

Afterward, her body will be cremated, marking the end of a long and sorrowful journey.

Luigina’s story is a poignant reminder of love, loss, and the enduring strength of family.

Though she spent most of her life in silence, her memory will continue to speak volumes to those who knew and loved her.
