The South African pear has made quite an impression in India, edging out pears from other parts of the world.
This shift in preference is highlighted by Shubha Rawal, head of sourcing at IG International, who spoke about it at the IFPA Southern Africa conference.
Rawal shared insights on how South African pears have stood out in the global market.
A Remarkable Rise in Popularity
Over the past five years, South African apples, pears, and citrus fruits have seen unprecedented success.
Rawal specifically praised the Forelles and Vermonts, noting their remarkable growth and high demand.
“We’re experiencing a shortage of these pears,” Rawal explained.
“They’ve essentially replaced all other pears coming into India from around the world.”
Thriving Amidst Price Challenges
Despite global price inflation impacting various regions, South African pears have managed to thrive in India’s expanding economy.
Rawal attributes this to a shift in consumer preferences toward fresh, nutritious produce post-Covid.
“Health consciousness has changed eating habits in India,” she said.
“Pears, along with citrus and avocados, are becoming increasingly popular.”
She also highlighted the year-round supply from South Africa, acknowledging the growers’ efforts to maintain this steady supply.
Export Success and Market Competition
South Africa’s pear exports to India have been so successful that there are concerns about potential market saturation.
As South Africa diversifies its export markets, moving away from traditional Northern Hemisphere destinations, the impact on the Indian market is becoming evident.
In 2006, South Africa exported 108,452 tonnes of pears, with the majority going to the UK, EU, and Russia.
By 2023, exports had more than doubled to 231,231 tonnes, with a significant portion now directed towards emerging markets like India.
This shift highlights a changing landscape in global pear trade and raises questions about future market dynamics.
