IGP Orders Police Officers to Stay Out of Land and Matrimonial Cases, Focus on Crime Prevention

…By Dorcas Funmi for TDPel Media. The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Usman Alkali Baba, has issued a directive to police officers, instructing them to refrain from interfering in land and matrimonial cases.

The directive was given during a meeting with senior officers at the Force Headquarters in Abuja on Monday.

During the meeting, the IGP emphasized that his administration would not tolerate the continuous violation of force regulations, particularly in relation to the social media policy.

He expressed concern over the practice of police officers criminalizing civil matters.

Since assuming the position of Inspector-General of Police, the IGP has consistently emphasized the need to streamline investigations and cautioned officers against involving themselves in civil matters such as land disputes, debt collection, matrimonial cases, and cases that are already pending in court.

He also stressed the importance of avoiding indiscriminate transfers of cases from lower commands to higher ones.

The IGP further shared statistics related to the police’s crime-fighting efforts.

Between January and May, a total of 3,619 suspects were arrested for various crimes across the country.

Additionally, 316 kidnapping victims were rescued during the same period.

The police also made significant recoveries, including 486 assorted firearms, which consisted of AK-47 rifles and locally fabricated automatic weapons.

Furthermore, 4,072 assorted calibers of live ammunition and other incriminating items linked to various major crimes were also seized.

By issuing this directive, the IGP aims to address the issue of police officers overstepping their authority and involving themselves in civil matters.

This directive seeks to reinforce the police’s primary role in maintaining law and order, ensuring public safety, and upholding justice.
