Hugo Broos applauds Bafana Bafana’s strong 2-0 victory over Uganda at Mandela National Stadium and silences critics

Bafana Bafana’s head coach, Hugo Broos, delivered a bold statement following his team’s 2-0 win over Uganda in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers.

The victory, achieved at the Mandela National Stadium, saw Thapelo Morena and Patrick Maswanganyi score for South Africa, securing a crucial result in the race for AFCON qualification.

A Victory That Silenced the Critics

Both South Africa and Uganda had already qualified for the tournament, thanks to South Sudan’s win over Congo Brazzaville the day before.

However, for Broos, this victory was about more than just securing qualification; it was about silencing critics who had been dismissing South Africa’s success as a result of luck.

In his post-match comments, Broos emphasized that the win against Uganda—on their home turf—proved that South Africa earned their place at the tournament in Morocco.

He made it clear that his team didn’t need any favorable circumstances to succeed.

“We Don’t Need Luck,” Says Broos

Looking ahead to the next match, Broos expressed confidence that a win would push South Africa to 14 points.

Reflecting on the qualifier against Uganda, he noted, “It was very important to win here today, especially to top the group.

No one can say we are lucky after the defeat of Congo. We showed we can win games without relying on luck.”

Broos emphasized that his team has earned its spot in the 2025 AFCON, underscoring that simply qualifying is not enough—South Africa aims to top their group.

The Goal: Finish First in the Group

For Broos and his squad, the mission is clear: finishing first in the group.

“We want to win every game,” he stated firmly. “We don’t play to lose.”

Broos made it known that while qualification is secured, his team’s ambition is to take the top spot, refusing to settle for second place in the group.

South Africa’s next match is against South Sudan on Tuesday, 19 November, at 6 PM.

Broos is determined to end the qualifiers on a high note and finish at the top of the standings.

Looking Ahead to South Sudan

“This is what they call a cherry on top,” Broos reflected, highlighting the significance of the win against Uganda.

Despite the tough opponent, he made it clear that the fight continues as Bafana Bafana sets their sights on another three points next Tuesday.

The road to AFCON qualification may be over, but the journey to group leadership is far from finished for Broos and his team.
