Anthony Guidera, the actor remembered for his roles in major Hollywood films including The Godfather Part III, Species, and Armageddon, has died at the age of 65 following a mysterious medical emergency that left doctors searching for answers.
Family Reveals Sudden Medical Crisis
According to his wife, Valarie, Guidera suffered a sudden cardiac event on May 11 while at the couple’s Southern California home.
She said his heart unexpectedly stopped beating, causing him to collapse in their living room.
The actor was rushed to a hospital, where he remained on life support for nearly three weeks.
Despite extensive medical care, physicians were unable to determine what caused the incident.
Final Days Spent at Home
Valarie explained that her husband had previously made his wishes clear regarding life-sustaining treatment.
Following those instructions, medical support was withdrawn, and he was allowed to return home to spend his final days with family.
Guidera passed away on Saturday. His widow said doctors still have no explanation for why his heart suddenly failed.
Breakthrough Role in The Godfather Saga
Born in San Francisco in 1961, Guidera entered the entertainment industry before turning 30.
His first major film appearance came in 1990 when he joined the cast of The Godfather Part III, directed by Francis Ford Coppola.
In the acclaimed crime drama, he portrayed a bodyguard serving Vincent Mancini, the ambitious mob figure played by Andy Garcia.
The film also featured Al Pacino, Diane Keaton, and Sofia Coppola.
Award-Winning Onscreen Moment in Species
Guidera expanded his film résumé in 1995 with a role in the science-fiction horror thriller Species.
The production featured an ensemble cast that included Ben Kingsley, Michael Madsen, Forest Whitaker, and Alfred Molina.
One of the film’s most memorable moments involved Guidera’s onscreen kiss with co-star Natasha Henstridge.
The scene earned the pair the MTV Movie Award for Best Kiss in 1996, defeating nominees including Antonio Banderas and Salma Hayek for Desperado, as well as Winona Ryder and Dermot Mulroney for How to Make an American Quilt.
Appearances in Blockbuster Action Films
The following year, Guidera joined the cast of The Rock, director Michael Bay’s action thriller starring Sean Connery, Nicolas Cage, and Ed Harris.
Guidera later reunited with Bay for the 1998 disaster epic Armageddon, sharing screen space with an ensemble that included Bruce Willis, Ben Affleck, Steve Buscemi, Billy Bob Thornton, and Owen Wilson.
Television Career Spanned Popular Series
Beyond film, Guidera built a steady television career with appearances on several well-known shows.
His credits included roles in Baywatch, Nash Bridges, Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, Angel, and ER.
He also portrayed the charismatic Etienne in the 1990s sitcom Cafe Americain, which starred Valerie Bertinelli as an American waitress living in Paris.
Final Screen Credit
Guidera’s last credited screen appearance came in the 2005 crime-comedy LA Dicks.
He headlined the project alongside filmmaker Dean Alioto, who also wrote and directed the film.
