A Russian attack drone struck the building of Ukraine’s We Are Ukraine television channel during daylight hours while journalists were broadcasting live, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said.
The broadcaster is part of the United News telethon, a national television initiative bringing together major Ukrainian news organizations. Zelenskyy said the strike partially destroyed the building and prompted emergency services to respond at the scene.
Five People Reported Injured
According to Zelenskyy, at least five people were injured in the attack. He warned that the number of casualties could increase as emergency personnel continued working at the site.
Ukraine’s State Emergency Service had already extinguished the fire caused by the strike, while other necessary services remained engaged in dealing with the damage and its aftermath.
The president did not provide further details about the identities or conditions of those injured.
Attack Occurred While Journalists Were on Air
Zelenskyy placed particular emphasis on the timing of the strike, saying it occurred in broad daylight while journalists were actively broadcasting from the building.
He characterized the incident as an attack not only on Ukrainian media but directly on journalists carrying out their work.
The Ukrainian president said the use of Iranian-designed Shahed drones against media infrastructure represented what he called a new stage in Russia’s conduct of the war.
Zelenskyy Demands International Response
The Ukrainian leader called on Europe and the wider international community to respond to the attack, arguing that strikes against civilians and civilian life should not go unanswered.
Zelenskyy said Ukraine could not accept a situation in which attacks on the country continued without consequences and called for Russia to be stopped.
Ukraine Calls for Joint Action Against Russia
Zelenskyy concluded by arguing that ending Russia’s aggression would require coordinated international efforts.
His comments came as Ukrainian emergency services continued assessing the damage from the strike on the television facility, while authorities dealt with injuries and the destruction caused by the attack.
