Health Secretary appoints Professor Lord Darzi to lead independent investigation into NHS England’s service challenges

In a bid to tackle the ongoing issues within the NHS, Health Secretary Wes Streeting has launched a comprehensive and candid review of its performance.

This initiative comes as recent data highlights increasing waits for routine care and ambulance services.

Streeting has enlisted Professor Lord Darzi, a renowned surgeon and former health minister, to lead this independent investigation, promising to reveal the ‘hard truths’ necessary for future reforms.

Lord Darzi’s findings, expected in September, will form the foundation of the government’s ambitious ten-year plan to overhaul the NHS.

The aim is to create a health service that can effectively meet the demands of the future.

The announcement coincides with NHS England’s latest report, which shows a rise in waiting lists for the second consecutive month.

As of the end of May, approximately 6.38 million patients were waiting for 7.60 million treatments, an increase from the previous month’s figures.

Additionally, the average response time for ambulances to handle emergencies like heart attacks and strokes rose to 34 minutes and 38 seconds in June, far above the target of 18 minutes.

There has also been a decline in the timely treatment of cancer patients.

In May, only 65.8% of patients started treatment within 62 days of an urgent referral, down from 66.6% in April.

These statistics underscore the urgent need for substantial changes within the NHS.

Streeting’s Commitment to Change

Wes Streeting emphasized the necessity for honesty and transparency in addressing the challenges facing the NHS. He has instructed Lord Darzi to leave no stone unturned in his investigation and to provide a raw and unfiltered assessment of the current state of the health service.

Streeting believes this is the crucial first step toward restoring the NHS to its former efficacy and reliability.

Professor Lord Darzi echoed the sentiment, stressing the importance of a thorough diagnosis before any treatment can begin.

His analysis will delve into the existing evidence to understand the present state of the NHS and its journey to this point.

This evaluation is vital for moving forward and reestablishing high-quality care as the central principle of the NHS.

Despite the overall decline in performance, there have been slight improvements in A&E services.

The number of patients waiting more than 12 hours from the decision to admit to actual admission decreased in June.

Furthermore, a marginal increase was seen in the percentage of patients seen within four hours in A&E.

Tim Gardner from the Health Foundation think tank noted the significance of this moment for the NHS, particularly given the severity of its current crisis.

He emphasized that, while there are no quick fixes, the right combination of policy changes, innovation, and investment could help restore the NHS.

Amanda Pritchard’s Perspective

Amanda Pritchard, the chief executive of NHS England, praised the efforts of NHS staff who continue to deliver care despite immense pressures.

She highlighted the importance of the forthcoming comprehensive analysis in addressing the scale of challenges and planning for a future-ready NHS.

The Need for More GPs

The NHS is also facing a shortage of general practitioners (GPs).

In April, there were 27,606 fully qualified, full-time equivalent GPs in England, translating to one GP for every 2,000 patients.

However, to maintain a safer ratio of 1,800 patients per GP, an additional 4,000 GPs are needed.

With the UK’s population projected to grow, this number is expected to rise to over 7,000 new GPs required in the next 12 years.

In summary, the newly launched review by Wes Streeting and the appointment of Professor Lord Darzi mark a significant step toward addressing the NHS’s pressing issues and planning for a sustainable and effective health service for the future.
