Former NUPENG General Secretary Urges Caution on Proposed Strikes, Advocates Patience for Tinubu’s Economic Rescue
Appeal for Prudent Approach
Former General Secretary of the Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG), Frank Kokori, currently undergoing medical treatment, has urged the leadership of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress (TUC) to reconsider plans for a proposed strike.
Speaking from his hospital bed in Warri, Delta State, Kokori advocated for giving President Bola Tinubu ample time to address the country’s economic challenges.
In Support of President Tinubu
Kokori, an All Progressives Congress (APC) chieftain, disclosed that he met with President Tinubu in June to discuss the nation’s expectations.
He emphasized the need for patience, stating, “People, including Labour, should give Tinubu some time to remedy the country.”
Kokori shared his concerns about the abruptness of strikes and highlighted the complex economic challenges facing Nigeria.
Concerns Over Economic Strain and Healthcare
Expressing his worries, Kokori pointed out that a significant portion of Nigeria’s income is allocated to servicing loans, reaching approximately 97%.
He emphasized the urgency of addressing these economic issues and urged against destabilizing actions such as strikes.
Additionally, Kokori lamented the state of the country’s healthcare system, citing the non-functional refineries and the absence of a functional public hospital in Warri.
Personal Health Struggles and Patriotic Dedication
Sharing his personal health struggles, Kokori revealed the challenges he faced during his hospitalization, including issues with power supply and healthcare facilities.
Despite his own difficulties, he emphasized his dedication to Nigeria, recalling his role in the struggle for democracy alongside figures like Beko Ransom-Kuti, Gani Fawehinmi, and Bola Tinubu.
Kokori’s plea for a functional healthcare system highlighted the broader challenges faced by citizens, emphasizing the need for comprehensive reforms.
Conclusion: A Call for National Patience and Healthcare Reform
Frank Kokori’s appeal from his hospital bed underscores the complexity of Nigeria’s economic challenges and the urgent need for healthcare reform.
