Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority Issues Stern Warning to Domestic Airlines Over Flight Delays and Disruptions

Expressing Displeasure at Alarming Flight Disruptions

In a statement released on Sunday, Chris Najomo, the acting director-general of the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA), expressed his dissatisfaction with the growing reports of continuous flight delays, disruptions, and schedule changes by domestic airline operators.

He emphasized the need for an immediate improvement in the current state of flight operations.

Unacceptable Customer Experience and Handling

Najomo voiced his concern over the unacceptable levels of flight disruptions, poor customer experience, and inadequate handling of passengers.

He made it clear that the prevailing situation is no longer tolerable, and errant airlines will face appropriate sanctions without bias, as the NCAA intensifies its surveillance to identify and penalize violators.

Call for Rejigging Flight Schedules

Highlighting a crucial aspect of improvement, Najomo urged airlines to align their flight schedules with the actual number of serviceable aircraft in their fleet.

He stressed the importance of considering sunset airports and recommended scheduling flights into these airports early in the day to minimize cancellations due to sunset-related closures.

Strict Monitoring of Compliance

NCAA’s director-general emphasized the organization’s commitment to ensuring compliance with regulations and vowed to take stringent measures against airlines failing to meet their obligations to passengers.

The intensified surveillance aims to monitor and enforce adherence to aviation standards.

Mandatory Assistance for Persons with Reduced Mobility

Capt. Najomo underscored the airlines’ responsibility to handle persons with reduced mobility with dignity and without discrimination.

Referring to Nigeria Civil Aviation regulations part 19, he emphasized that airlines must provide facilities for the movement of such individuals.

Additionally, he highlighted the mandatory field for special needs assistance on ticket portals and urged agents to actively inquire about passengers’ assistance requirements during ticket purchase.

Minister’s Determination to Enforce Five-Point Agenda

Reiterating the need for airlines to enhance their services, Najomo pointed out that the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Mr. Festus Keyamo, is resolute in enforcing his five-point agenda, mandated by President Bola Tinubu.

This underlines the broader commitment to improving the overall aviation sector in Nigeria.**
