Family and teammates honor Missouri State football player Todric McGee during emotional tribute at Plaster Stadium after accidental shooting death

On Monday night, the family of college football player Todric McGee came together to honor his memory after a tragic incident that claimed his life.

The Missouri State player, aged 21, passed away over the weekend following an accidental shooting.

The devastating event took place early on Friday morning, and police have confirmed that it was indeed a tragic accident.

Remembering Todric

Loved ones gathered at Missouri State’s Plaster Stadium to remember McGee, where his mother and sister shared their heart-wrenching thoughts about his loss.

“He was always there, and he was just everything. He was a sibling I needed,” said McGee’s sister, Tahlia Pope, in an emotional interview with KY3.

His mother, Stephanie Pope, spoke with a sense of clarity amidst her grief, stating, “He wasn’t depressed, there’s no mental issues or anything like that that would make this happen.

“It’s just a tragic accident, and I just want people to know that he’s a good kid.”

Teammates Speak Out

At the gathering, McGee’s teammates also took a moment to share their feelings.

One teammate described him as more than just a player on the team—he was family.

“He brought laughter to our huddles, strength to our team, and light to our lives.

“His spirit will never be forgotten,” the teammate said, capturing the deep bond McGee shared with those closest to him.

Dreams and Ambitions

McGee was just a few months away from graduating in December with a degree in psychology and a minor in exercise science.

His mother recalled how he always dreamed of helping other athletes transition after their playing days ended.

“He wanted to help players and student-athletes with their transition… that’s why he wanted to do sports psychology,” she said.

A Rising Star Cut Short

As a senior safety, McGee had been a standout player for Missouri State, starting for three seasons.

Unfortunately, his 2024 season was cut short after he suffered a season-ending injury in just five games.

Missouri State’s director, Patrick Randsdell, expressed the university’s grief, saying, “On behalf of the university and our entire department, we want to express our condolences to Todric’s family, friends, and teammates.

“This tragedy has shaken our football program to the core.”

Coach’s Reflection

McGee’s coach, Ryan Beard, also shared a tribute on social media, reflecting on the impact McGee had on those around him.

“As I sit and reflect on the last 24 hours, the thoughts of Todric’s infectious smile and competitive spirit are the things I see the most,” Beard wrote.

“There is no greater honor than to be called a coach, and it is something that we do not take lightly.

“You watch young people become men right in front of your eyes, and they become a part of who you are.

You love these guys like your own sons.”

Moving Forward

The loss of Todric McGee is a reminder of how fragile life can be and the deep connections formed through sports and shared experiences.

His family, friends, and teammates will forever carry his memory, as his light continues to shine in their lives.
