Back in 1997, Eric September was arrested for the murder and rape of his wife. After awaiting trial for three years, he was sentenced in 2000 to 27 years in prison. He was eventually released in 2010.
A couple of years ago, the disgraced former player alleged that lawyers had disappeared with a more than R1.4 million payout by the Road Accident Fund (RAF).
This came after he was involved in a car accident in 1994, which saw him sustain head and spinal injuries, and also hurt his left leg. The accident effectively ended his football career.
During an interview back in 2018, September even then told City Press that he had hit rock bottom financially.
During his playing days, Eric September featured for Kaizer Chiefs, Sundowns and Jomo Cosmos, as well as Bafana Bafana.
According to an article now published by The Citizen’s Phakaaathi, September is currently resorting to recycling in order to make money and buy food after his life has fallen apart.
“It’s sad to see someone like him roaming around the street collecting garbage, it’s really sad because this is someone we grew up looking up to and he had a very good football career,” a Phakaaathi source is quoted as saying.
“What happened to him by going to prison was very unfortunate. I think that was the beginning of his downfall because before he was arrested he was living in a big house and had everything that he wanted.
“I just wish someone could offer him some help because he is a really good guy and he knows what he did in the past was wrong and he paid for his mistakes. Everyone deserves a second chance and I believe he deserves it.”
Now 55 years old, September had previously spoken out several years ago about his time in prison and how he hoped he’d be able to turn his life around.
