A family day at the seaside turned into a devastating tragedy after a mother and her 15-year-old daughter lost their lives while attempting to rescue a six-year-old girl who had been swept away by rising waters at West Mersea beach in Essex.
Emergency services were called to the coastline near Colchester at approximately 5.30pm on Wednesday following reports that several people were in difficulty in the sea.
Authorities believe the incident unfolded as the incoming tide and powerful currents caught members of the family off guard.
Multiple Casualties Reported
The rescue operation resulted in multiple casualties.
While the mother and teenage daughter were pronounced dead despite extensive efforts by emergency responders, another person remains in hospital in a serious condition.
Two additional people were treated for injuries that are not believed to be life-threatening.
The East of England Ambulance Service confirmed that one casualty was airlifted to hospital, while three others were transported by road for further medical treatment.
Reports Describe Family’s Attempt to Save Young Child
According to reports from Bangladeshi news outlet Daily Dazzling Dawn, the victims entered the water after a six-year-old child was swept away by strong currents created by the rising tide.
The publication reported that the family had been enjoying a summer trip to the beach when the emergency occurred.
The report stated that the woman and her teenage daughter attempted to rescue the child but became overwhelmed by the conditions in the water.
Other relatives also reportedly sustained injuries during the incident.
Community Figures Confirm Victims’ Identities
Daily Dazzling Dawn reported that the deaths were confirmed by Abul Kalam Azad, convenor of the UK Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), and the party’s UK member secretary, Khosruzzaman Khosru.
Although the victims’ names have not been publicly released, the publication identified the deceased woman as the daughter of former UK BNP vice president Mujibur Rahman, originally from Chhatak Upazila in Sylhet, Bangladesh.
It also reported that she was married to Dr. Mansur Rahman, a leader of Jubo Dal, the youth wing of the BNP.
The publication added that Mujibur Rahman was present at the beach during the incident but was too distressed to comment further.
Large-Scale Emergency Response Launched
A significant emergency response was mounted as police, ambulance crews, firefighters, coastguard teams, lifeboat crews and air ambulances rushed to West Mersea.
Witnesses reported seeing at least six ambulances, numerous police vehicles, a fire engine, a lifeboat, two air ambulances and a coastguard helicopter attending the scene.
A coastguard vehicle remained at the beach into the evening while an area near the shoreline was cordoned off as investigators began their work.
West Mersea Coastguard Rescue Team later described the incident as “tragic” and extended its condolences to the family affected.
Witnesses Describe Desperate Rescue Efforts
People at the beach recalled frantic attempts by both emergency responders and members of the public to save those in the water.
One holidaymaker said children had initially encountered difficulties before adults entered the sea in an effort to help, only to become trapped themselves.
Other beachgoers also joined the rescue attempt, but the conditions proved extremely challenging.
A caravan owner nearby described hearing helicopters overhead before seeing emergency personnel performing CPR on a casualty along the shoreline while bystanders encouraged rescuers to continue their efforts.
Police Appeal for Information
Essex Police have launched an investigation to establish the full circumstances surrounding the incident and are asking anyone who witnessed what happened to come forward.
Detective Chief Inspector Al Pitcher said officers’ thoughts remain with the grieving family and thanked witnesses who have already assisted investigators.
He urged anyone who was present at West Mersea beach and has not yet spoken with police to make contact to help build a complete picture of the events.
Police also expressed their condolences to the family and loved ones of everyone affected by the tragedy.
Strong Currents Pose Ongoing Danger
West Mersea is known for rapidly changing tidal conditions and strong currents that can develop as the tide rises, creating hazardous conditions for swimmers and visitors unfamiliar with the area.
Authorities have not yet released further details about the sequence of events as enquiries continue into the fatal incident.
