Airbus Defence and Space has committed to becoming the anchor investor in the newly established E2D growth fund, reinforcing its long-term commitment to advancing Europe’s defence and dual-use technology ecosystem.

The investment is intended to accelerate the development of high-growth companies building next-generation capabilities for both military and civilian applications.

By supporting the fund at its launch stage, Airbus aims to help expand access to growth capital for innovative technology businesses across Europe, enabling them to scale more rapidly in strategic sectors.

E2D Fund Targets High-Growth Defence and Dual-Use Companies

Introduced in June 2026 through a partnership between European venture and growth capital firms AVP and Earlybird, the E2D fund is focused on backing growth-stage businesses operating in critical technology areas.

The fund plans to invest in roughly 20 companies, with an average investment of approximately €25 million per portfolio company.

Its investment strategy covers a broad range of sectors, including space, aviation, land systems, maritime technologies, and subsurface operations.

The fund specifically seeks businesses with modern operational models and technologies capable of serving both commercial and defence markets.

First Investment Backs AI-Driven Security Technology

Alongside announcing Airbus as its cornerstone investor, E2D revealed its first portfolio investment in France-based Alta Ares.

The company develops artificial intelligence-powered hardware alongside platform-agnostic software designed to support intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR) operations.

Its technology is also aimed at enhancing counter-unmanned aerial system (UAS) missions, addressing the growing demand for advanced detection and defence capabilities against drone threats.

€500 Million Ambition to Expand Europe’s Defence Technology Base

E2D is targeting a total fund size of €500 million, positioning it among the significant growth-focused investment vehicles dedicated to Europe’s evolving defence and dual-use technology sector.

With support from Airbus Defence and Space and investments in companies such as Alta Ares, the fund intends to strengthen Europe’s industrial and technological capabilities by providing the financial resources needed for innovative firms to expand their products, operations, and market reach.
