A coalition of countries has issued a strong appeal at the 62nd session of the United Nations Human Rights Council, warning that the worsening conflict in Sudan is placing hundreds of thousands of civilians at immediate risk.
Speaking through Ireland on behalf of the Coalition for Atrocity Prevention and Justice for Sudan, the group urged the international community to respond swiftly to the deteriorating humanitarian and human rights situation in and around El Obeid.
Humanitarian Crisis Deepens Across Sudan
The coalition described Sudan’s ongoing conflict as a humanitarian catastrophe that continues to inflict severe suffering on civilians.
According to the statement, the fighting has triggered widespread displacement, disrupted access to essential humanitarian assistance, and further restricted press freedom across the country.
The group stressed that civilians continue to bear the heaviest burden of the conflict as insecurity spreads and access to lifesaving aid becomes increasingly difficult.
El Obeid Faces Growing Threat From Intensified Attacks
Particular concern was raised over the situation in El Obeid, where escalating drone attacks have reportedly killed civilians and caused significant damage to critical infrastructure.
The destruction has worsened shortages of essential goods and services, leaving residents in an increasingly fragile situation.
The coalition warned that conditions are expected to deteriorate further with the arrival of the rainy season, as humanitarian needs continue to grow while aid workers themselves face repeated attacks.
It estimated that approximately 500,000 civilians are currently at serious risk, warning of an increasing likelihood of large-scale atrocities if urgent action is not taken.
UN Debate Seen as Strong International Warning
Addressing the Human Rights Council, the coalition emphasized the importance of the urgent debate on El Obeid and the accompanying resolution, describing them as a clear indication that the international community is closely monitoring developments in Sudan.
The statement also reaffirmed support for the ongoing work of the UN Independent International Fact-Finding Mission for Sudan, highlighting its role in investigating alleged violations and documenting abuses committed during the conflict.
Coalition Urges End to Siege Conditions
The coalition specifically called on the Rapid Support Forces to bring an end to what it described as siege-like conditions affecting El Obeid.
It also appealed to every party involved in the conflict to immediately reduce hostilities and prioritize civilian protection.
The statement urged combatants to ensure safe routes for civilians seeking to leave dangerous areas and to guarantee rapid, safe and unhindered access for humanitarian organizations delivering emergency assistance.
Appeal for International Support and Sudan-Led Peace
Beyond the immediate conflict, the coalition appealed to all governments to avoid actions that could further fuel the violence through harmful external interference.
Instead, it encouraged states to use their diplomatic influence to promote the protection of civilians, humanitarian workers, and vulnerable communities.
Concluding its address, the coalition reaffirmed its support for a Sudanese-led peace process, urging the international community to help prevent further atrocities while backing efforts aimed at achieving a lasting political solution to the conflict.
