Russian authorities say a drone attack struck a public market in the city of Tokmak in the Zaporizhzhia region on Thursday, leaving at least five civilians dead and 18 others injured.
According to Russian officials, the attack occurred during daylight hours while the market was busy with shoppers. Ukraine had not publicly commented on the Russian claims at the time of reporting, and the reported casualty figures could not be independently verified.
Russian Investigators Open Terrorism Case
Russia’s Investigative Committee announced that it has opened a criminal investigation into the incident under Article 205 of the Russian Criminal Code, which covers acts classified as terrorism.
Investigators said they would examine the circumstances surrounding the strike and determine those responsible under Russian law.
Local Authorities Say Victims Received Medical Treatment
Russian-appointed local authorities said emergency services responded to the scene shortly after the reported attack.
The injured were transported by ambulance to Tokmak Central District Hospital, where they were receiving medical care, officials said.
Authorities also indicated that emergency operations were continuing following the reported strike.

Rodion Miroshnik, Russia’s Ambassador-at-Large, described the incident as a deliberate attack on civilians, alleging that multiple drones targeted a crowded public area.
He characterized the strike as a terrorist act and accused Ukrainian armed forces of responsibility, calling the deaths and injuries a serious violation of international humanitarian law.
Human Rights Commissioner Calls for Investigation
Russia’s High Commissioner for Human Rights, Yana Lantratova, also condemned the reported attack, describing it as an assault on civilians.
She said her office was monitoring developments closely and remained in contact with regional human rights officials involved in assisting those affected.
Lantratova called for a full investigation into the incident and said every civilian casualty should receive a legal assessment.
