Emotional trial unfolds as jurors are shown footage of two men allegedly cutting down the Sycamore Gap tree at a treasured Northumberland location

A tragic and puzzling incident has led to the trial of two men accused of cutting down the famous Sycamore Gap tree in Northumberland.

The tree, known for its stunning location and historical significance, became the focal point of a ‘mindless’ act of vandalism that shocked the public.

The Video Evidence

During the trial, jurors were shown a disturbing video that allegedly captured the moment the tree was felled.

In the grainy footage, the unmistakable sound of a chainsaw can be heard before the massive tree is seen crashing to the ground.

It’s said that one of the accused, Daniel Graham, filmed the act on his phone.

The two men, Daniel Graham, 39, and Adam Carruthers, 32, from Carlisle, are charged with criminal damage for the incident that occurred on September 27, 2023.

Prosecutors described their actions as part of a “moronic mission.”

The Damage Beyond the Tree

The destruction of the Sycamore Gap tree also caused damage to Hadrian’s Wall, a UNESCO World Heritage Site located nearby.

The tree itself, which had stood for over a century, was cut down in a few minutes.

Prosecutor Richard Wright KC explained how the men allegedly used silver spray paint to mark where to cut and then made a wedge cut to control the tree’s fall.

One of the men reportedly filmed the act while the other cut down the tree.

The court has also heard that both defendants seemed to take pride in their actions, with the news of the felling going viral shortly after it occurred.

Sycamore Gap’s Cultural Significance

The Sycamore Gap tree was more than just a local landmark; it had become an iconic symbol of Northumberland.

Archaeologist Tony Wilmott from Historic England told the court that the tree was widely recognized, often appearing in media, and had become a special place for many people.

For years, it had been the backdrop for proposals, family visits, and even ceremonies like scattering ashes.

As Wilmott put it, the tree had become a “totemic” symbol for the community.

Police Footage at the Scene

Body camera footage from PC Peter Borini was also shown to the court.

He arrived at the scene on September 28, 2023, just a day after the incident.

In the footage, PC Borini is heard telling bystanders to step back as authorities began gathering evidence.

The destruction of such a beloved landmark left the local community in shock and disbelief.

The Trial Continues

Both Daniel Graham and Adam Carruthers deny the charges of criminal damage.

As the trial continues, the full extent of the damage to both the Sycamore Gap tree and the surrounding heritage site is yet to be determined.

The case has sparked widespread debate about the importance of protecting cultural landmarks and the consequences of senseless acts of destruction.
