Billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk has once again argued that the war between Russia and Ukraine is unlikely to conclude without a negotiated agreement that includes concessions to Moscow.
Speaking in an interview published by The Economist, Musk said expectations that Russia would completely withdraw from occupied territory were, in his view, unrealistic and unlikely to lead to a lasting peace.
Musk Defends Earlier Calls for Negotiations
Reflecting on his previous statements about the conflict, Musk said he has consistently supported diplomatic efforts rather than a prolonged military confrontation.
He explained that suggesting compromises should not be interpreted as backing Russia but as acknowledging what he believes will eventually be required to end the fighting.
According to Musk, extending the conflict for years would only result in more destruction and loss of life, adding that he hopes a peace agreement can be reached sooner rather than later.
Criticism of Political Leaders and Diplomacy
Musk also took aim at what he described as detached political discussions surrounding the conflict.
He argued that while diplomats and officials debate possible outcomes from comfortable offices and conference rooms, soldiers continue to lose their lives on the battlefield.
In his view, practical solutions should receive greater attention than political messaging.
Kremlin Says Communication With Washington Continues
The Kremlin has meanwhile confirmed that contacts between Russia and the United States remain ongoing as both sides continue discussions related to the conflict.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov described the continued dialogue as a positive sign but urged caution against expecting any immediate breakthroughs.
He said conversations are continuing, but stressed that it is still too early to suggest negotiations have entered a new or accelerated phase.
Musk Has Repeatedly Backed Diplomatic Solutions
This is not the first time Musk has publicly advocated negotiations as the path toward ending the war.
In March 2025, he argued that diplomacy would ultimately determine the conflict’s outcome and questioned what realistic alternatives existed for those rejecting negotiations altogether.
Musk has also previously criticised several European leaders and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, accusing them of focusing on high-profile engagements while the war continued.
Russia Maintains Conditions for a Lasting Settlement
Russian President Vladimir Putin has repeatedly stated that any long-term peace agreement must address what Moscow considers the underlying causes of the conflict, including NATO’s continued expansion toward Ukraine.
The Kremlin has maintained that Russia intends to achieve its objectives either through diplomacy or, if necessary, by other means.
As diplomatic contacts continue behind the scenes, Musk’s latest comments add to the ongoing international debate over whether compromise or continued military support offers the most realistic path toward ending the war.
