Box Office Flop Becomes Streaming Sensation as Masters of the Universe Storms Prime Video

The latest Masters of the Universe film has found a new audience after making its streaming debut on Prime Video, where it has quickly risen to the number one spot in the UK rankings.

Although the fantasy action adventure struggled to make a major impact at the global box office, its arrival on the streaming platform has sparked renewed interest among viewers, many of whom have praised the film for its action, humour and nostalgic appeal.

Streaming Release Follows Cinema Debut

The film first premiered in UK cinemas on June 5 and continues to screen at selected theatres despite becoming available to stream on Prime Video on July 22.

Its relatively quick move to streaming has attracted attention, particularly after industry observers linked the decision to its modest theatrical performance.

Global Earnings Fell Short of Expectations

At the worldwide box office, Masters of the Universe generated just over $110 million (around £82 million), a figure widely viewed as below expectations for a major studio release.

Entertainment outlet Digital Spy suggested the film’s transition to streaming may have come sooner than anticipated, noting that a stronger cinema performance could have delayed its digital release.

Viewers Respond More Positively Than Critics

While ticket sales failed to impress, audience reactions have painted a far more encouraging picture.

The film currently holds an 86% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes, indicating that many viewers have embraced the reboot despite its lukewarm commercial results.

Fans have particularly highlighted the film’s entertaining action sequences, familiar characters and nostalgic connection to the original franchise.

He-Man Returns to Save Eternia

The story follows Prince Adam, portrayed by Nicholas Galitzine, who is reunited with the legendary Sword of Power after spending 15 years stranded on Earth.

Returning to Eternia, Adam discovers his home has fallen under the control of the villainous Skeletor, played by Jared Leto.

Alongside Teela, portrayed by Camila Mendes, and Duncan, played by Idris Elba, Adam embraces his destiny as He-Man and sets out to reclaim his kingdom while protecting those closest to him.

Franchise Has Deep Roots in Pop Culture

The He-Man franchise first emerged during the early 1980s when toy manufacturer Mattel introduced the Masters of the Universe action figure line.

Originally designed to compete with the hugely successful Star Wars toy range, the brand soon expanded beyond toys with the launch of the popular Filmation animated television series in 1983.

The cartoon helped transform He-Man into one of the defining pop culture icons of the decade.

Critics and Fans Offer Different Perspectives

Critical opinion has been divided, even as audiences have largely embraced the film.

Digital Spy compared the movie’s style to fantasy adventures such as Thor and Dungeons & Dragons: Honour Among Thieves, praising its energetic tone while acknowledging that some of its comedy relies on juvenile humour.

Audience members were considerably more enthusiastic.

One viewer described the film as “a wonderful action film” that remains entertaining throughout, while another praised its blend of action, humour and emotional stakes, comparing it to earlier Marvel Cinematic Universe productions.

Others appreciated the numerous references to the classic animated series, saying the film successfully rekindled childhood memories.

Critics Wanted a Bolder Approach

Professional reviewers were more reserved in their assessments.

Randy Myers of the San Jose Mercury News argued that although the film assembled a talented cast and director, it could have embraced its over-the-top fantasy elements more confidently.

Katie Walsh of Tribune News Service echoed similar sentiments, suggesting the movie held back from fully embracing its campier side.

However, she singled out Nicholas Galitzine’s performance, saying his portrayal of Prince Adam and He-Man stood out as one of the film’s greatest strengths.

Prime Video Success Could Give the Film New Life

Despite falling short in cinemas, Masters of the Universe appears to be enjoying a second chance through streaming.

Its rapid rise to the top of Prime Video’s UK chart suggests the film is connecting with home audiences, demonstrating that strong viewer support can sometimes arrive long after a movie leaves the big screen.
