Eastern Cape police officers involved in deadly shootout with alleged extortionists in Mthatha West, killing mastermind Sakhumzi Mareke

In a recent event that has shaken the Mthatha community, Eastern Cape police found themselves under attack in a shocking and despicable incident.

The attack, which targeted law enforcement officers, was allegedly carried out by Dalinzolo Sakhumzi Mareke, a known figure in extortion activities in the Mthatha West area.

Eastern Cape Police Commissioner, Lieutenant General Nomthetheleli Mene, expressed her dismay at the violence, highlighting the severity of the situation.

Police Shootout Ends in Tragedy

On Wednesday afternoon, a confrontation between the police and suspected criminals resulted in a fatal shootout.

Sakhumzi Mareke, the alleged mastermind behind extortion operations in Mthatha West, was killed during the exchange.

Alongside him, two other armed suspects were also fatally shot, while one police officer sustained injuries and was taken to the hospital.

According to Lieutenant Colonel Siphokazi Mawisa, a spokesperson for the South African Police Service (SAPS) in Eastern Cape, the incident occurred after the National Intervention Unit (NIU) had completed an operation.

As they were returning to their base, they noticed two suspicious vehicles trailing them.

When the police arrived at their premises, the occupants of these vehicles opened fire, leading to the deadly encounter.

Mareke’s Criminal Ties and His False Identity

It was confirmed by the AbaThembu Royal Kingdom that Sakhumzi Mareke was not a traditional leader or chief, despite any claims to the contrary.

The royal kingdom condemned the actions of individuals who falsely present themselves as traditional figures while engaging in criminal activities such as extortion.

They urged others involved in such behavior to cease immediately.

Official Response to a Heinous Act

In response to the incident, Eastern Cape Police Commissioner Mene emphasized the gravity of the attack on the police, labeling it as one of the worst forms of violence against law enforcement.

A case of attempted murder has been opened, and the matter is now being investigated further by the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID).

Additionally, three firearms and ammunition were recovered from the scene.

Commissioner Mene urged police officers to remain vigilant, prioritize safety, and be prepared for any operational challenges they may face.

The incident serves as a stark reminder of the dangers law enforcement officers encounter in their line of duty.
