Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson recently took to the beaches of Hawaii to film scenes for Disney’s upcoming live-action remake of Moana.
Fans of the Polynesian demigod Maui will be excited to see Johnson, 52, return to the role he first voiced in the 2016 animated version.
This time, he’s fully immersed in the character, donning a leaf skirt, his intricate tattoos, and of course, going shirtless to flaunt his signature muscular physique.
The Rock Channels Maui
In the latest behind-the-scenes glimpse, Johnson showcased his larger-than-life presence, donning Maui’s iconic flowing raven wig and whalebone necklace while playfully wielding the character’s magical fish hook—a symbol of his shapeshifting powers.
Between takes, the actor sported his signature tinted shades, exuding the same charm and energy that made him famous in the wrestling ring.
As a longtime fan favorite known for his strength, Johnson’s physique is looking more defined than ever, especially as he posed with his muscular arms and pecs on full display.
Introducing Moana’s New Face
Joining Johnson on set is Catherine Laga’aia, a 17-year-old actress of Samoan heritage, who is set to portray Moana, the brave Polynesian heroine.
Laga’aia, a relative newcomer to Hollywood, expressed her excitement about representing her Pacific Island roots.
“I’m honored to have an opportunity to celebrate Samoa and all Pacific Island peoples,” she said, reflecting on her family’s connection to the islands.
Moana holds special meaning for her, and she’s eager to bring this beloved character to life.
A Star-Studded Cast for the Live-Action Remake
Along with Johnson and Laga’aia, other key cast members have been announced for the live-action Moana.
Auli’i Cravalho, who voiced Moana in the original animated film, will reprise her role in the sequel, Moana 2, set to release in November 2024.
The film also features John Tui as Moana’s father, Chief Tui, Frankie Adams as her mother, Sina, and Rena Owen as Gramma Tala.
Directed by Thomas Kail and with music by Lin-Manuel Miranda, this adaptation of Moana is shaping up to be a star-studded spectacle.
Why the Live-Action Remake?
Disney’s decision to bring Moana to the live-action screen comes after the huge success of the animated original, which grossed $687.2 million worldwide.
While it’s only been seven years since the first film’s release, Disney is capitalizing on the celebration of their 100th anniversary, making the remake feel timely and special.
Johnson has always held Moana close to his heart, especially as it reflects his Samoan heritage.
“This story is my culture,” he said.
“I wear this culture proudly on my skin and in my soul.”
The Rock’s Personal Connection to Maui
For Johnson, playing Maui isn’t just another role—it’s a way to honor his late grandfather, High Chief Peter Maivia, a legendary figure in the Polynesian community.
Johnson has previously shared that the inspiration for Maui came from the “mana” and presence of his grandfather, whose legacy he strives to embody in his portrayal of the character.
“When I bring Maui to life, I’m doing it in the spirit of my grandfather,” Johnson revealed, his passion for the role evident.
Exciting Times Ahead for Moana Fans
With the live-action Moana slated to premiere on July 10, 2026, anticipation is already building.
But before that, fans can look forward to Moana 2, which will continue the journey of the title character and her friends.
As the release of this new version approaches, it’s clear that Disney is pulling out all the stops to make this reimagining just as beloved as the original.
