Nigeria’s national basketball team, D’Tigers, continued their remarkable run in the ongoing China-friendly basketball competition by defeating the Serbian basketball team with a commanding score of 81-53.
This victory comes on the heels of their impressive 75-70 win against Team USA in their tournament opener in China.
Impressive Form Despite Paris 2024 Olympics Miss
D’Tigers embarked on a playing tour of games in China, leaving Nigeria last Monday.
Their remarkable form in this competition follows their disappointment in failing to qualify for the Paris 2024 Olympics during a qualification series held in Lagos, Nigeria, in August 2023.
Part of Development Initiatives by Nigeria Basketball Federation
The tour of games in China is just one aspect of the development initiatives organized by the Nigeria Basketball Federation (NBBF) board, chaired by Musa Ahmadu-Kida.
This initiative aims to maintain and enhance the competitive edge of the Nigerian men’s senior basketball team.
Context: Nigeria’s Withdrawal from International Competitions
It’s worth recalling that in May 2022, former President Muhammadu Buhari allowed the sports ministry to withdraw Nigeria from all international basketball competitions for a two-year period.
This decision was a response to a persistent leadership crisis within the Nigeria Basketball Federation and the demands of players for improved welfare benefits and treatment.
China Autumn Tour as a Morale Booster
Following the end of the Federal Government’s self-imposed suspension last year, players from the local league and various leagues worldwide are using the China Autumn Tour as an all-expenses-paid competition to boost their morale and showcase their talent.
