North Carolina is grieving the loss of a beloved journalist who became synonymous with the Raleigh Christmas Parade.
Donna Gregory, a veteran news anchor, passed away on Tuesday, just months after being diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer.
Her family and colleagues shared the heartbreaking news, with many expressing their deep sorrow at the loss of someone who touched so many lives.
A Legacy in Journalism
Donna Gregory’s journey in broadcasting began after she earned her degree from Southern Illinois University.
Her career took off in Oklahoma, but she truly made her mark at WRAL, where she co-anchored from 1988 to 1996.
She was the face of Raleigh’s Christmas Parade for years, an annual event that draws tens of thousands of visitors.
Gregory was also known for her involvement in covering the NCAA’s Final Four Basketball tournaments and hosting a special on teen pregnancy in North Carolina, “Kids Having Kids.”
Most recently, she was a nighttime anchor at WWAY.
A Battle with Cancer
In April, Donna’s life took an unexpected turn when she was diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer.
Throughout her fight, she remained a source of strength and inspiration.
Her former colleague, Julia Sims Milstead, recalled Donna’s unwavering resolve, stating she “fought cancer with all her might.”
Milstead remembered her as a role model, a fearless professional who was also deeply devoted to her children and family.
Another longtime friend, Frances Scott of WTVD, shared a touching story about Donna’s kindness.
During a difficult period in 2012, after Scott had undergone surgery, Donna showed up with a homemade feast and even invited Scott and her family to her beach house for a day of laughter and solace.
Scott described Donna as “such a light,” a woman who knew how to comfort those in need.
Sharing Her Journey with the Public
Donna was open about her battle with cancer, frequently sharing updates with her viewers.
She posted heartfelt messages on social media, thanking her “Angels disguised as friends” for their support.
She remained hopeful, focusing on getting stronger each day.
In one of her final posts, Donna humorously remarked about being back in the hospital, showing her resilience even in tough times.
As her treatment continued, Donna faced setbacks, including lung inflammation and pancreatitis.
Her family rallied around her, providing love and care throughout her journey.
Her daughter-in-law, Amanda, shared a moving tribute on Instagram, remembering Donna’s warmth and love, which she will forever carry with her.
A Family’s Tribute
Donna’s children, Sam, Callan, Avery, and Everett, expressed their gratitude for the outpouring of love and support they received during her illness.
They described her as the “heart of every room she entered,” always making everyone feel welcome and supported.
In a heartfelt tribute, Everett shared that his mother was his hero and promised to make her proud every day.
Donna Gregory leaves behind a legacy of kindness, strength, and love.
Her family, including her grandchildren, Hayes and Coley, and her son-in-law and daughter-in-law, Shane and Amanda, will continue to carry her memory in their hearts.
