After his service on active duty, he served in the US Army Reserve from 1972 until 1994, when he retired with the rank of Lt. Colonel.

In recognition of his service, Donald was awarded the Purple Heart, Bronze Star, and Army Reserve Achievement Medal.
Donald worked for the City of Taunton as a devoted public servant. He began his career teaching social studies in the Taunton Public Schools.

He worked there as an assistant principal, principal, assistant superintendent, and superintendent of schools up until his retirement in 2010. Donald was dedicated to serving his neighborhood and cherished the City of Taunton.

He supported a number of community organizations, including Taunton Pop Warner, Old Colony YMCA, Taunton Area School-Career, Kiwanis and Kiwanis Key Club, Elks Lodge #150, and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 611.

Following his retirement from the Taunton Public Schools, Donald also served as the city’s 50th mayor and a councilor.

On August 27, Donald Cleary, 79, passed away in the loving care of hospice nurses at Morton Hospital with his beloved family by his side.
Donald Cleary was born on February 24, 1944, in Boston, Massachusetts, to the late Harold J. and Elizabeth (Donovan) Cleary.

While growing up in Taunton, he proudly attended Coyle High School and St. Mary’s Primary School as a member of the Class of 1962.

At Providence College, where he pursued his further studies, he graduated with a bachelor’s in education.
He completed his education at Northeastern University, where he earned his MA in 1974 and his CAGS in 1980.
In 1967, he married Judy Conway, and the two eventually had Donald Jr., Jeffery, Jessica, and Keith.
Family Weeps The Damage
Donald is survived by his wife of 56 years, Judith Cleary, as well as his children Donald Cleary Jr. of Franklin, Jeffrey Cleary of San Francisco, Jessica Fernandes and her husband Peter of Taunton, and Keith Cleary and his wife Teressa of Mansfield.
He was the brother of the late Hunter Cleary, Samantha Cleary, Janel, Mia, and Covu Fernandes, as well as the late Elizabeth Ploude and Harold Cleary Jr.

All of Mary Kate and Jack Cleary were ecstatic that Donald was their grandfather.
He also leaves behind his sister-in-law Ruthann Cleary, brother-in-law Richard Ploude and his wife MaryAnn, sister-in-law Elizabeth LaBrode and her husband Myles, and his late brother-in-law John Conway and his wife Julia Conway.
Additionally, Don has a sizable number of beloved nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews. At the Crapo-Hathaway Funeral Home, 350 Somerset Ave., there will be visiting hours for Donald.

Thursday, August 30, from 4 to 7 p.m. in Taunton. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m. on Friday, September 1st, at St. Mary’s Church in Taunton, located at 14 Saint Mary’s Square.
