Wheelchair racing icon David Weir has decided to retire from Paralympic competition, wrapping up his impressive career with a fifth-place finish in the men’s T54 marathon at the Paris Games.
At 45 years old, Weir’s journey has been nothing short of extraordinary.
He clinched six Paralympic gold medals, with four of those coming from the London 2012 Games alone.
He first burst onto the scene at the Atlanta Games in 1996 when he was just 17.
Final Paralympic Performance
Paris marked Weir’s seventh and final appearance at the Paralympic Games.
As he crossed the finish line in the T54 marathon, his emotions were evident.
Weir shared that this would be his last race representing Team GB, despite his continued passion for the sport.
“I’m still doing all right,” Weir said after completing the marathon with a time of 1:33:27.
“It was quite emotional at the end because this will be my last race for GB.
I’ll still compete in major marathons, but this is the end of my international career.”
Looking Back and Moving Forward
Weir’s career has been marked by numerous accolades and memorable performances.
After debuting as a teenager in Atlanta, many believed his best years were behind him following the Rio Games in 2016.
However, Weir defied expectations by shining at the Tokyo Games and making a notable return to the Paris Games.
Despite stepping away from the Paralympics, Weir plans to continue competing in major marathons, including the London Marathon.
His dedication and competitive spirit remain strong, even as he acknowledges the challenges of aging.
Other Results
In other news from the Paris Games, British athlete Eden Rainbow-Cooper did not finish the women’s T54 marathon.
What’s next for David Weir and Team GB? Only time will tell, but Weir’s legacy in the Paralympic world is firmly established.
