Daniil Medvedev Faces $76,000 Fine After Temper Tantrums at Australian Open

Russian tennis star Daniil Medvedev has found himself in hot water after a series of outbursts during the Australian Open that earned him a hefty fine.

The world number five was penalized a total of $76,000 (approximately R1.42 million) due to his temperamental behavior, which included destroying a net camera, tossing his racquet, and skipping a required post-match press conference.

Explosive Outbursts During First-Round Victory

Medvedev’s first meltdown occurred during his five-set first-round match against Thailand’s Kasidit Samrej.

Frustrated by his performance, he took his anger out on his racquet, damaging both it and a nearby net camera.

For this outburst, Medvedev was slapped with a $10,000 (R190,000) fine.

Even Bigger Penalty After Second-Round Exit

The situation escalated in Medvedev’s second-round match, where he faced 19-year-old qualifier Learner Tien.

After crashing out of the tournament, Medvedev threw his racquet toward the sidelines, sending it skidding across the court until it struck an advertising panel near his bench.

He also argued with the umpire after being called for repeated foot faults.

His behavior resulted in an even larger fine of $66,000 (R1.23 million).

Missing the Press Conference

To make matters worse, Medvedev skipped his mandatory post-match press conference following the loss, which only added to the controversy surrounding his behavior.

Medvedev has been a frequent finalist at the Australian Open, having reached three of the last four finals, including one in 2024 when he suffered a dramatic collapse after leading by two sets against Jannik Sinner.
